Relocating to Upstate N.Y.

by BzzyBee

Hi Everyone,
I am currently enrolled in the LVN Nursing Program in California and will graduate in November of 2010. I plan on relocating to Upstate N.Y. in the spring of 2011 and am wondering what I will need to do to take the N.Y. State licensing. If anyone fill me in, I would appreciate it. I can get a heads up, so to speak.

Thank you

I moved from CA to upstate NY last year and I assume the process is similar for LVN as it was for RN. Just fill out some forms, send one to California so they can verify the license to NY (along with money ), send one to your school to do the same (possibly with money) and one to the board in NY (definitely with money). Wait two months, bother them a little and voila, you have a NY license. There's a few other things like an online infection control and/or child abuse course, but those things you could work out when you get closer.

Forms and money will get it done assuming you have already passed nclex by then. Be aware the pay here is nothing like it is in California!

Thank you so much for your reply. This is actually the first time someone answer one of my questions. I can't wait to get out of California so the less pay isn't going to be an issue.

Thank you again.

Hi, This is your lucky day! At least a start to it. Today in the mail, I received my application to renew my registration. So, your starting point is in the address that I am sending to you.
The State Education Department
Division of Professional Licensing Services
89 Washington Avenue
Albany, N.Y. 12234
Website: www.op.nysed.gov
Good luck to you in your move. What part of N.Y. are you headed for? I live in the Adirondacks, and cold weather has started to hit here with a vengeance! Snow on the ground this morning! The weather will get better again before it gets worse, though. Let me know how you make out...........

I live about an hour south of Old Forge and luckily haven't gotten any snow yet! But it's been cold! Yuck...I hate it! Summer went by way too fast.

Thank you so much for the address and website. I appologize for taking so long to reply. I won't be relocating until 2011 as I graduate in Nov. 2010 and due to weather will need to wait until the winters clear. I can't wait!!! I don't like California and can't wait to get to Horseheads or somewhere in that vicinity. Thank you again for the info.

Hey BzzyBee, where in Upstate are you relocating to? You should definitely start applying long before your move. From what I remember, in CA you need your CA-RN license before you can receive job offers? Some states don't allow you to work while you wait for the license, but NY allows you to, just about as soon as the BON receives your application.
. . . just throwing my two cents in there, congrats on your upcoming graduation!

I'm an hour east of Horseheads in Bingamton, NY...it's cold, but only a tiny bit of snow so far. I think it's going to be a bad winter though :P

What do you mean by the pay here is nothing like in California? Is it higher or lower than CA? Thx
