Question about living in NYC on RN salary


I'm a 26yo. male currently in Nursing School in Pittsburgh (ADN program)...I am interested in moving to NYC after obtaining a PA Nursing license...Besides finding a place, transferring the Nursing license, etc. Is it possible to make it on my own on a Rn salary. I would rather not live in an outer borough so basically I want to know if I'd make it in Manhattan...I realize I'm not going to have a lavish apartment so I would be looking for a studio...And I would prefer not to have a roomate...you people would know best! Thanks for any input in advance!

A studio is going to run you $1200 a month IF you find a deal. Seriously.

There are parts of Brooklyn and Queens that are accessible and less expensive, but they've climbed in price, too.

Some hospitals offer housing options that can sometimes be cheaper than normal rents.

Hmm really? I read about this before but wasn't sure how likely it was and who had that option...That sounds like a good inquiry when it comes time to job search! Thanks

You can do it but it can be tight especially in Manhattan without a roomate. I am a BSN New Grad and I'm living in a studio by myself. Its tight but I should be ok(I've only been here a month) Why are you getting your PA liscense 1st? are you going to work there? If not just get the NY one from the start(you can take the NCLEX anywhere as long as you sign up for the right state. This is of course IF you can FIND A JOB, DO NOT move without a job. Good Luck!

Thanks for your insight that's what I was looking to hear! I am going to get my PA license so I can work for a few months here before I pack up and leave...I'm sure it will take some time to find a job and a place so during that process I will be working in Pittsburgh...Good luck since you've only been there 1 month hope it all works out!

Do apply for NY state license a month ahead,,, they take at least 4 weeks. You won't get a job without one.
