Excelsior is a college in New York. They offer a program that allows LPNs and certain other medical personnel to obtain their RN at home. Basically you study for one subject at a time on your own and "challenge" the test at the end. You'll have to take a test for each subject. You generally start with prerequisites and then you have Micro, A&P, and seven nursing tests. Afterwards you prepare for the clinical exam or CPNE. The CPNE is a test. You will not be helped to complete tasks at the CPNE. Once you pass the CPNE and all the tests you get your diploma and take the NCLEX-RN.
Excelsior isn't an online program. If you are looking for an online program there is one called Deaconess although I am not familiar with it. There are people on this board that are Deaconess students though. Deaconess will allow a CNA to work towards their RN (I believe); Excelsior will not.
Excelsior also has an ADN to BSN program.
Most states do recognize Excelsior nurses. I believe that Illinois does not and possibly California.
Word of advice from someone who has been there and done that
: stay away from contracts with 3rd party publishers i.e. Rue, Moore, DLSI, Chancellors.

Ditto what frogleg said. Go to regular nursing school- don't get cheated out of your education. You can't get out of these things once you sign up. You can always drop out of real school, and you only lose the semesters tuition. These people will hunt you down till they get all their $$$.
