Roswell - ENMMC Info

I have an opportunity to move to Roswell, NM this year. I am currently an ER RN in a large hospital (360 beds in the hospital, 34 ER beds) and I am worried about taking too big a hit on pay with the move (despite realizing that the cost of living will be much cheaper in Roswell ). I'm thinking about applying to Eastern New Mexico Medical Center - ER. Does anyone have any info on pay rates there? Or # of ER beds (I know the hospital has about 150-160)? Working conditions? Morale?

My husband was a medic in Roswell - very high acuity patients, very busy ER considering the size of Roswell, he says. I also work with the Schumaker group doctors - many were sent there but would never go back - they thought it was too hectic (some of them were good doctors too). They recently underwent a complete management overhaul and I have not heard good things about it since that time (from an ER standpoint). I dont know how big a facility it is - probably smaller than what you are used to.

I recently had my clinicals at ENMMC and really enjoyed the atmosphere and staff. My professor had been a nurse there for many years and had wonderful things to say about the facility. She also said the pay was great. Im not sure what the pay for your career would be, but I really enjoyed being at ENMMC. I think you should check it out a little more before making a decision!

I worked there as a traveler this year. It is quite the culture shock if you're used to larger medical facilities. The ER typically has a lot of mental health patients since ENMMC has the only inpatient psych unit in the area. They use a lot of travelers and have a high turnover rate. Morale is very low. The pay is more than the other hospital in town but an RN with 10+ yrs of experience makes under $30/hr. Good luck!

Just wondering... what area did you work in... I am traveling there this week with Cross Country and another manager from a different hospital told me that I'd end up being floated all over the hospital, but the manager at Eastern said that I will only be floated to Peds... I read that many of the travelers break their contract because of all the floating...

Yes, it is true that many of the L&D travelers have broken their contracts or who don't renew. I don't subscribe to the "a nurse is a nurse is a nurse" philosophy. Several nursing administrators including the DNS do. Consequently, you will float to pediatrics if they are short or you will take care of peds patients on L&D. You may not be floated to do nursing care in other areas but they will float you all over the hospital to be a sitter. If you aren't comfortable doing something, speak up but do so with caution. There were only 3 regular L&D staff when I left. Try to work with one of them for a couple of days.
