UMDNJ ABSN program Fall 2013

U.S.A. New Jersey

Published

Hello Everyone,

I am a new member trying to get information about the UMDNJ ABSN program and thought the best and most accurate information would come from fellow students who have already successfully applied to the program.

I am currently taking the one prerequisite I need before I can apply (Anatomy & Physiology II) and recently attended an information session. One thing that left me with questions was about the 5 year rule on some of the classes (A & P I and II, Microbiology).

I am hoping that someone can clear my confusion on this. I graduated with a BS in Biology in May 2009. I took A & P I my last semester and am taking A & P II now. When it comes to Micro I took it Spring 2008. Now does that mean I am ok applying for Fall 2013? I tried emailing someone to ask with not much luck. Do you guys think it would be a problem and I should retake it? Anyone was or is now in the same boat?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you.

Thanks mikeyooc, what would you advise to brush up on? any tips?

Did anyone send in their tuition deposit and criminal background check fee yet? It says to send it to Enrollment Services. I am assuming they are talking about the office in Newark right? Even though I am going to Stratford.

Just get everything you can imagine taken care of ( personal, financial, etc.) before you start. Once this program starts, it's no joke! Make sure you get all of your medical clearance stuff done and out of the way. This is a serious full time commitment. Thankfully, my loved ones are supportive otherwise this would be impossible. I don't want to make you crazy but many of us didn't realize how intense it is but we are doing just fine! . Be in touch! Take care, Mike

Hey guys! Just caught up on what everyone was talking about and I, too, am so anxious to hear back. I applied to the Newark program and so nervous!! Congrats to everyone who already got in to either campus and hopefully I'll have good news as well. *knock on wood*

Thanks for the advice Mike, I am sure it wont be a breeze but I am determined to work hard. Also, the Newark orientation is officially Aug. 13 from 8 to 5 if anyone was wondering. Does anyone know how to go about applying for loans, do I have to set up an appt. with the financial aid office? I was on a scholarship for my first degree so I do not have any knowledge of loans. Any info will be appreciated. Thank you.

I got accepted to Strarford, sent my check and waiting to hear for the next step. Anyone know how long that process takes?

After I sent my check I received an email within 2 days with steps of activating NetID, setting up an email, orientation date, and curriculum.

Thank you so much! Did you got into Stratford campus as well?

No, I was accepted to Newark. It is about a 20 min commute for me so it works out better :)

Hey all

I’m a level 1 at Stratford. Everything Mike said is true – INTENSE. Some advice I wish I had been given in the months I was waiting for the program to start:

1) Brush up on your A&P – mechanisms and regulations of fluid, cardiac system, renal system, etc. Know it all – you will be using it.

2) Take the NALC class. It helps so much with the med math and terminology and makes you aware of your strengths and weaknesses

3) get your books early and read at least the first 5 chapters for each class. When our syllabi was posted for the starting week, we had less than a week to read about 5 chapters for each class. Be prepared! You will always be reading!!

4) register your books with Lippincott on their The Point site. Start doing the practice tests, etc.

5) If you already had a Health Promotion, Research, and/or Policy class (these are levels 1, 2, and 3) classes then do a request transfer credit. I didn’t know about this and now I spend 3 hours each Wednesday sitting through a health promotion class that I took in my undergrad. I just got out of my Research class for level two and I’m starting to fill out the paperwork for level 3 for policy. You will need this extra time to study or catch up on sleep.

6) if you are a procrastinator, think about changing your ways. Seriously, there is an exam each week in level one – covering 5-8 chapters. While you are preparing for that exam you still need to read the several chapters for the other classes and do papers, etc.

7) The effects of the merger with Rutgers really haven’t been seen by us yet other than we now wear black scrub pants instead of white at the hospital clinical.

8) Enjoy your summer because starting in September your life as you know it will drastically change. It’s not horrible – but you must be willing to make sacrifices and put school first.

9) The instructors at Stratford are all very nice. I am learning a lot and I’m amazed at what I have accomplished just shy of 2 months. This is a hard program but there are resources available to help you succeed but you need to put in the effort and time.

Good luck to you all!!

Congrats to everyone accepted. And @melissanj that is so helpful!!! I definitely plan on taking your advice; especially about getting ahead with reading. Thank you so much!

Agreed!!! Solid advice. Does anyone know about the date of TEAS testing? Is it on the same day of orientation or will we get info about it later on?
