Please Help! How Do I Apply For Nclex 4yrs After Graduation?

U.S.A. New Jersey

Published

I graduated a few years back from a school in New York but didnt take the nclex. I would like to register to take the nclex in new jersey. Anyone know what the procedure is for someone in my situation? I plan to call the NJ BON and see what they say but in the meantime I would love to hear your opinions. Also, do I need to contact the NY school to tell them to send my info to NJ BON or does the BON contact the school? Any info and/or tips will be trully appreciated.

I know in NY u can can it until u pass it but not sure if u never have taken it before. I would just take it for NY and transfer over to NJ just incase they have a time frame. Thats what Im doing now I went to school in NY but live in GA and BON is totally different..Good luck

You will need to ask your school to submit your transcripts indicating that you completed the coursework and graduated with an official seal. This is described on the NJ Board of Nursing website. You may want to take a NCLEX prep or nursing refresher course before scheduling your NCLEX exam to brush up on the fundamentals of nursing plus any changes in practice that may have occurred since you graduated.

You can go to the board of nursing website and either apply for application for licensure by examination online or print out a paper application and mail it in.

Thanks for responding! Anyone know the best way to contact NJ BON. I've been on the phone for close to an hour and nobody is picking up the phone. Just listening to the boring music and constant "the next available agent...."

You can contact them online. Its graduation season and the BoN is likely inundated with calls from new grads anxiously awaiting their ATT and license.

The application and requirements are available online. You can print a paper application or apply for license by examination. The paper application explains what you need to have your school of nursing submit to the board of nursing. Remember you are not applying to take the NCLEX but applying for licensure by examination taking/passing the NCLEX is just one step in the process for licensure.

The person I spoke with told me to go ahead and apply. I plan to drop off the application in person. This way I can ask more questions.

Just an update. I dropped off the application about two weeks ago and now am just waiting to hear from the BON. I really recommend dropping off the application in person if possible. Something was missing from my application and they were able to tell me there and then so I took care of it the next day. If I had mailed the application, I would have had to wait until I heard from them in the mail. They were also able to check for me if my school had sent my info to them.
