I'm an experienced nurse in this lousy state and cant get a full time staff position- If you have no ties- kids in school, spouse with a job, then go to another state. NJ really sucks- all around- attitudes, lack of jobs, property tax you name it and NJ is the worst.

Took me a year to find something. I start in Sept. Be persistent, take classes, seminars, volunteer and network. something will pan out eventually.

Its hard but not impossible. It took me a year and almost upon my year anniversary of graduating school, I got an interview and landed the job. Keep trying, Try everything within reason, and also network. Volunteer to get know the nurses and managers. Perhaps they can help you or keep you in mind when a position does open up.

I will be graduating with my BSN in December. I plan on applying to some jobs prior to graduation in hopes of having something lined up. Has anything in the northern NJ area had luck with finding a job before graduation?? I see on other posts that people have a real hard time finding jobs in NJ. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I graduated this past May w/ an associates..passed the NCLEX in July and actively searching all day every day. You might be luckier than I am because Valley, and Hackensack amongst others i presume prefer BSN. Ive seen allot more graduates get hired when they do a Externship in one of these hospitals...Good luck! )))

hey you guys. if you're from north jersey, bergen regional is hiring new grads. my friend recently is employed there and told me to apply there but its a 1.5 hr drive and then itll be like working 16 hr shifts. im really thinking of applying there bc its $35? wage better than around central but i used to commute 1 hr and work 12 hr+ in my last job and remembered i promised myself never to do something like that again (was very stressful when it rained and snowed and sometimes, i just stayed the night around the area) if you guys find something too, let me know. i think im just going to play the waiting game and get board certified and do some school while i wait and pray, hehhe. id like to get school done too.

Wow Thanks for the info. I am feeling so discouraged these days. How did your friend apply fax, in person or online? The hospital is in a nice area and the pay is good. I will try to apply too.

I've been licensed as an RN in NJ since August 2010 and haven't found work yet. I am in a BSN program, maybe that will help. I'm trying not to give up. I'll take anything as I am still working in housekeeping at a hospital that I've worked for 5 years. I'm BCLS,ACLS.PALS.and basic dysrhythmia certified.Any suggestions?

Merged threads re tight job market.

Difficulty for new nursing graduates obtaining first nursing position extends from Philadelphia to Boston area and has been this way since 2008 when economy started to tighten belts and healthcare employment cut to the bone.

Same thing happened in 1974 when construction dried up and DH laid off, 1984-85 in nursing + healthcare when DRG's + HMO's introduced with first wave "cost containment" occured. Current economic crises has decended across MANY areas: education, business, law, journalism immediately come to mind.

Nursing graduates most affected in this area are those from ADN programs. With increase of BSN candidates and desire to have best educated workforce, employers in Philadelphia health systems have moved to "BSN required" hiring.
