Bergen Community College Nursing Program Question

U.S.A. New Jersey

Published

Last Thursday I was at the college for the purpose of collecting my Chemistry grade with some classmates. Apparently, there was a graduation ceremony for RN's going on that night as well, and my friends started talking to one student to ask her about the program. I didn't hear the entire conversation, but one of my cohorts told me the student had stated that ELEVEN people had failed out of NUR-181 alone during her course!

Now, there's always a chance there was some sort of misunderstanding or miscommunication, but does this sound right? For what it's worth, I would think the application process and competitiveness of getting in to the program would assure a strong student population, so it makes me nervous to hear these things. I already received some insight from someone privately, but I was wondering what the public population made of this info.

Thanks!

I'm not sure thats possible, applications begin in mid january i believe for the fall daytime

Hi everyone...I am taking the Hesi tomorrow. Does anyone know the average as of today?

Hi everyone!

I took the HESI this weekend and scored a 91%. I wish I had scored higher, but I gave it my absolute best. I only had time to study this week since I am busy with work and school. I am hoping and praying that my score and a 4.0 gpa are enough to secure a seat for spring 2012, but I have read that some people last semester didnt get in with 90+ scores, ugh. I am definitely obsessing online and reading old posts!! My fiance thinks I am crazy..lol.

For those who haven't taken the HESI yet, don't stress out; it honestly wasn't too bad (especially compared to the TEAS). I would recommend studying the following information:

1) VOCAB- make sure you know ALL of the vocab in the Evolve Hesi study guide; I thought this was a really helpful tool for this portion of the test. A lot of the words on my test were found in the review.

2) GRAMMAR- this section was SO easy!! I literally laughed out loud at one of the questions because it was ridiculously easy. If you speak English, you will pass this section with a 90+.

3) BIOLOGY- The biology portion was the toughest by far. If you took microbiology, review the following sections in your old textbook: DNA-to-protein sythesis, DNA replication, transcription (e.g. RNA, mRNA, definitely know the bases and how they match up...A-T, and C-G, etc), DNA transcription and translation (know where each occur in the cell), the makeup of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, meiosis vs. mitosis, haploid vs. diploid and their # of chromosomes after cell replication, osmosis, hypertonic vs. hopotonic solutions (I had THREE questions about this!), endocytosis, exocytosis, know all of the organelles and their functions, photosythesis, respiration (aerobic vs. anaerobic). I also had a couple of questions that were more anatomy related such as: "what system moves oxygen throughout the body?", and "what tissue surrounds the organs and outer body?".

4) CHEMISTRY- this section wasn't too bad, but I have been taking chemistry for the past year and I'm currently taking honors-level Chem 1, so that helps for sure :). If you took Intro, study your notes and old textbook. I had questions about pH (acidity vs basicity), bonding (covalent, hydrogen, ionic), reactants and products (very easy), the number of molecules and atoms in a compound (e.g. "how many atoms of oxygen are in H2O?"), the charges of neutrons, protons, electrons. I didnt have any questions on stoicheometry or electron configuration. The Evolve Hesi Study Guide wasn't helpful at all for this section!! Make sure you review your Intro notes and textbook and know the basics!!

5)MATH- the math was really basic. Most of the problems were fractions, decimals to percents, ratios, adding and subtracting mixed fractions, a few metric conversions, a couple military time questions. The Evolve Hesi Review is helpful for this section!!

Overall, the test isn't too difficult. The biology section brought my score down, otherwise I would have scored in the mid-90s :( I just hope I made it after many long nights of studying all night! My fingers are crossed. GOOD LUCK to everyone!!!!!!

Hi everyone... I took the Hesi on 10/13, I've been going crazy for a whole month! I got an 88%, with a 3.5GPA so we'll see.... As of today the average is a 76%... Hopefully we'll hear something before Thanksgiving.... Torture.

Hey guys! I too took the test and averaged out at a 88. Did you guys notice when taking the test that you are not allowed to change your answer??? Once clicked your doomed. I took my test at night and it was by 10 pm when I got out so yea I might of clicked my mouse a couple times by mistake.... so I found out the hard way. So beware! I read that some say you can check webadvisor to see our admission status to the program. So far nothing..... Good luck to everyone!

Great job RP30 and nancy s!!! I guess all we can do now is wait. It's such TORTURE!!! Does anyone know how to check the class average scores on Evolve? I see where it says the class average is 76, but some people were able to pull up actual averages for each portion of the test (biology, math, etc). I cannot seem to find this on their site.

Okay, I must stop obsessing now :)

phccRN2B,

Thanks but I am not thrilled until I get the acceptance letter. I am so anxious and desperately waiting. No really I am! As for the evolve thing, I have no clue. That site is so confusing. I am about to color my roots right now before class tonight. You are right--- this is straight up torture!! HE He...

glad to see others here also waiting in the torture...lol last semester it took about a week or so to see "admitted" in web advisor..so i’m truly hoping we'll know by thanksgiving! give me something else to be thankful for!! good luck to everyone!

Hi Pixiedust! I am happy I'm not the only one obsessing over this! Is it me or does it feel nearly impossible to become a nurse? There are sooo many hoops to jump through just to get into a program! I was accepted into a program in Florida last fall, but at the same time my fiance took a job here in NJ so I was forced to decline :(. It seems wayyyy more difficult here because Bergen is so populated which means schools are a lot more competitive (this was something I was not prepared for when I decided to move here). The good news is that we will all come out of this being extremely hard-working and strong. You have to be to get through this!! I was a Nurse Recruiter for a long time and trust me, it's totally worth all the hard work. I can't think of a more rewarding career!

Nancy S, I think we are in pretty good shape if the average is 76 :)! Only time will tell, but an 88 is well above average!

it is an extremely competitive program to get into, which i find good to a degree. i originally applied to day/fall but had to decline. now i hope i get accepted again, i did all my pre-requisites and now anxiously awaiting the final decision. from my knowledge, a good hesi score & gpa coupled with being a bergen county resident really ensures you a spot.

i don’t qualify for financial aid, so i am most likely getting a loan. anyone else funding the semester with a loan? how is the loan process with bergen?

I changed my username from phccRN2B to krissy3 since I am no longer a student at PHCC :)

Pixiedust, I am also taking out loans. So far, I think the process is relatively easy at Bergen compared to my experiences at previous schools. I would get in touch with someone in the loan department to fill out the appropriate paperwork ASAP if you haven't done so already. Have you looked into some of the costs involved prior to clinicals (i.e. CPR, uniforms, books, , etc)? From reading previous posts, it sounds like there are a lot of upfront fees! Yikes!
