I am seriously considering applying to Ramapo and would appreciate any feedback. I have been an LPN for 6 years and a diploma program, while shorter, will only be a stepping stone to the BSN and I may as well just go straight for it. Any input pro or con would be appreciated.

Southernurse, I only know of one person that graduated from Ramapo--(A beautiful campus BTW) and she said that the instructors were great however she would not recommend it b/c when you sign up they dont tell you that you will have to travel an hour one way to get to your classes/clinicals. Not all of the students had to do this, only certain clinical groups that agreed to go to this particular site(I forget where she said it was). They would have a clinical there and then hours later they would have a class so they would have to wait around and be away from campus for sometimes 12 hours/day several days a week. This is all I know about the nsg program. However, I did visit the campus once for my daughter and was very impressed--it is very picturesque.

good lord, really? 12 hrs several days a week? i am married with 3 kids and i have to work....that will not do...i swear there is such an uproar about nursing shortages presently and to come, but the programs make it nearly impossible to accomplish. insane!

I graduated from Ramapo this past May and i have to say their Nursing program was great. Its a tough program but the instructors are always willing to help with anything, they are very open. As for the info you received regarding clinical sites, its absolutely untrue and i would always recommend that people speak directly to someone in the Nursing program in order to obtain accurate info. Valley Hospital in Ridgewood and Englewood Hospital are the primary sites for where you will have all the clinical s except for psych which is at Bergen regional. Basically you either in Valley or Englewood group. Hope this helps, let me know if you have more questions.

thank you!!! now i just have to find out about what kind of work hours i can juggle around the schooling. i have to work at least 30 hrs a week while in school. (it can be done)

I'm a senior right now in the Englewood site. What do you want to know? Listing random pros and cons will only get you so much and bore me to death =) ... I'll check back .....

well, i certainly don't want to bore you! ok, since i have been worked to death lately, here are specifics i can come up with at the moment:

1) what are school day hours

2) what are clinical hours, and do they offer day or evening choices

3) do you have to go to one hospital or many for all but psyche

4) do you feel you are getting an excellent education

how's that for now?

This is from the ENGLEWOOD point of view. All info will pertain to Junior / Senior level when the "real nursing classes" start. The first 2 years are just a bunch of "fluff" classes (History, Stats, English and etc) asides from A&P I + II (

1. I don't recall my Junior hours but I'll give you my senior one. The times vary from semester to semester as to be expected.

Mon: 8am - 4pm

Tues: 8am - 3pm

Wens: 8am - 2pm (Clinical)

Thurs: 8am - 2pm (Clinical)

Friday: Day Off. There used to be a class on this day, but they just moved it to Tuesdays to give us 3 day weekends. Nice!

Note: ALL ... every single one of your classes takes place in Englewood Hospital, assuming you choose Englewood hospital. If not (you chose Valley) your classes are at Ramapo campus. You will not step foot back in Ramapo unless you're dorm'ing there or for the annoying occasion where you have to go back to set up your classes for the next semester.

2. Regardless of the day all clinicals start at 8am and end at 2pm. There is NO flexibility in classes or clinicals. Everything is set in stone.

1st Sem Junior = 1 Clinical

2nd Sem Junior = 3 Clinical (Motherbaby, Peds, Psyche)

1 Sem Senior = 2 Clinicals

2nd Sem Senoir = Dunno ... LOL

I know the Valley group has a RADICALLY different schedule than us .. for example they have classes after their clinicals.

3. Englewood for your standard Med/Surg bedside stuff. Peds was at Valley Hospital (1/2 of us) or some other hospital whose name that completely escapes me right now. Bergen Regional for Psyche. Mother/Baby/maternity/L&D were all at Englewood.

4. Excellent Education. What's there to say. Every prof brings a massive amount of experience with them. All are very very approachable, some scarier than others o_O. Need a more specific question or I'll start to ramble =)

Hint Hint: Join Englewood. Here's the deal breaker though. From what I've been hearing ... that "wait list" is getting absurd ... there are only 100 spots every year ... so .............. yeah ....... Nursing program is booming and not enough teachers.

Just question away .... I think I got it set to reply to me by email if you reply back

ramble on! 8-2 is perfect since i work 3-11. the waiting list must be insane...when i inquired at mountainside for the quickie diploma, they said i could not start until 2011. ccm has no waiting list, or so they said...i just want to finally finish. i was 5 months out of finishing my lpn to rn bridge in tennessee when i blew my knee out and had to leave school. so frustrating....talk to ya soon!

Oh, and the reason I asked about quality is due to the fact that my micro prof merely read to us out of the book and put the book illustrations on the overhead. No lecture, no answering of questions. I didn't learn a thing....

I can attest to the Englewood Profs ... they teach ... we might not be there mentally when they do it though .. it's pretty text booky stuff and does really require reviewing over and over again till it clicks at home.

They are very approachable ... and they want you to ask questions ... better to know than look like a complete fool on the floor if they ask you what drug does what ... how it works ... Side effects and etc ....

If you got any more questions (telling me to ramble is not gonna get you anywhere =) ... have at it
