Some Hospitals in NJ not hiring LPNs ?

by DaddyO

Someone once told me that there are some hospitals in North Jersey, that are no longer hiring LPNs. Can anyone confirm this and tell me which hospitals.

Thanks !

It will be easier for you look for who does hire LPNs than who doesnt. I know that the medical center in Hoboken hires LPNs. Im not exactly sure who else does.

Thanks for the reply. But I am asking this because i have been asked by a prof to look into this further.

I do recall reading this in a post....and I can't remember if it was Holy Name or which.

I also know that this is going on, although I don't know which hospitals exactly are doing it. Most hospitals are finding that LPN's take too much away from RN's in terms of time management. Most LPN's can't do IV pushes, so an RN has to be pulled from their own patients to do IV push pain/anti-emetic/whatever meds on an LPN's patients. At the hospital I used to work at the LPN's couldn't do their own chart checks nor take verbal orders from doctors, so essentially a nurse had double her own caseload and often leading to OT on the RN thus a waste of resources.

So why do we still have LPN schools then?

I'm not sure how accurate this is, but I had heard for a while that many hospitals (nationally, not only in NJ) are "phasing out" the hiring of LPN's, and that LPN schools themselves are becoming scarcer. I had clinicals in many different hospital settings, and the only LPN i ever came across had been on that floor for 15 + years. I think LPN's these days are having an easier time finding employment in LTC and dr's offices. I graduated from RN school in May, and my program had an LPN- RN program built in, the LPN's who graduated as RN's had a much easier time finding jobs as RN's and were hired much faster than those of us who weren't LPN's, due to their years of experience.

I am getting ready for LPN school in NJ and before I registered I checked the "want ads" for job openings and there are still plenty of positions in LTC and Dr's offcs and home health care. I didnt want to work in a hospital anyway so I find LPN to be right up my alley. Also, I have 2 small children so I think it will be easier for me to start with LPN for my sanity and theirs! Always room for advancement!
