psych

by fgold

Hi everyone,

I am a psych nurse (recent rn, lpn for 2+years) and I have never done anything else but psych. I have heard how I should have done med surg and I might still but for now I really enjoy pysch.

Here is my question. I am not from NJ, I live in pa but I have worked (and still do) at both hagedorn and carrier clinic. I do like both of them but I was wondering if there are any others I can check out. Too bad I am not real familar with what is out there. Can anyone help?

I am looking for good psych units, any age group, in northern NJ.

It doesn't have to be a huge place, it could be small but a good place to work.

Any help would be appreciated

Hello,
I did my pscyh rotation in St Mary's Hospital in Passaic County. It is a very
small unit but the people are really great to work with. The big psych hospital in Bergen County is Bergen Regional but I didn't hear too much
good reviews about it. ( In fact all I've heard is "overworked and underpaid")

I have heard to psyc. unit at Hackensack University medical center is nice. There is also a psyc hospital system in the area, Greystone. I don't know much about Graystone but have seen ads for them, here is the website:

I work at the facility in south jersey and there are a lot of nurses there that have never worked in med surg either. But I recommed that you at least work at a med-surg hospital for at least a year it will help you assess your patients. Mentally ill folks have chronic medical diagnosis too; hypertension, heart disease, renal disease...etc. you need to be able to assess them as the RN. When there are codes and they do have codes there you need to know what to do. There are plenty of psych hospitals in North Jersey pay is great and benefits if you are considering the state hospitals.

I did my rotation at Trenton Psychiatric Hospital. The grounds are massive and have several buildings on their grounds based on mental illness acuity. The even have the forensic center on their grounds which is for the criminally insane. It's a state job and the benefits are phenominal. Plus they start at $31 an hour (approx) for new grads (but I don't know what it is for those who have experience). I found it fascinating, but psych just isn't for me.
