NJ Hospital and Starting Salary

I was just wondering if some current nurses would mind divulging what hospital they started at and what salary they were started at. I'm far from taking my NCLEX but I am debating if I want to stay in NJ or move around a bit and would like to start a list of hospitals that had good reps and good starting salaries.

Hello!

20 years ago, I became a Nurse. I started at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ.
I don't remember my starting salary 20 years ago LOL.

Now I commute back and forth to Philadelphia and work in the ER at a center city hospital and get $63 an hour which is more than a lot of nurses are getting paid in NJ.

Hope this helped!

-Ashley, RN.

Ashley,

Just curious if you're on a strange shift (like a baylor) to get that much, or it's your experience, or the hospital location, or something like that. That's a ton more than I ever planned on making, but it's making me consider philly hospitals when I graduate!

No, I am not on a strange shift. I work full time, 4 days a week.
The hospital at which I work, is a very large teaching hospital in the center of Philadelphia. I have been a nurse for 20 years, and the hospital pays you based on your experience and it only hires nurses with their BSN's.

Philly does tend to pay pretty high, compared to NJ, because in some parts of the city, the cost of living is higher.

Hope this helped, Good luck!

I'm fairly certain that the 60+ figure is just for agency or per diem work with a ton of experience. From my experience, the highest paid RN's are those in NE Jersey. Specifically, those at Hackensack, Jersey City and the Palisade. That being said, there are other programs, like the one at Jersey Shore, that help you with nursing school debt. You should look into all of your options.

I can't help you with current salaries, but just for a chuckle I will share with you my starting salary in 1981 --- $8.65 an hour. Makes me laugh to think about it now, but that was a lot of money for me then just coming out of school.

I remember about 20 years ago being offered $20.00 an hr for an MD office, and that really was a generous offer.

Good Luck as you move forward!
