I am in the same boat. Some new grads seem to be getting jobs based on some of the posts I have seen on here but that doesn't seem to be the norm. I have been told by two HRs that they have all been talking amongst themselves and are sad for new nurses but that I should start looking at other states because either the hospitals in NJ aren't hiring unless you have several years experience or the unit managers do not want a new nurse to train. What states are open for new nurses? Here is what I have been told- Western PA, Ohio, KY, TN, TX, Louisianna, Florida, Georgia, N, Carolina and S Carolina.

I have applied for- no joke- about 200 jobs. I have gotten two calls in state and they both told me "we don't have anything for you right now" I have gotten 3 calls from out of state wanting to hire me now. I am still trying to resist the urge to move... I am going to give it another month.

Best of luck to you and all the new grads out there struggling with the this "hiring freeze".....i so feel your pain. Applied 200 jobs-that's impressive!!! I am in the same boat as you, not planning to relocate....in the meantime lets do our best and hope for the best:saint:

RNMariposa~ Do you have your BSN? What school did you go to? I will be graduating May 2010 w/ BSN and I'm curious about the market. Did you do a nurse extern program?

No, I have a BSW and an AAS in Nursing. Because I already have a degree I am only a few classes short of BSN. I wasn't able to do an extern because I had to deal with some personal matters. I am kicking myself now because of it. Everyone I have talked to that did one got hired. I have tried to apply for one now and they won't take me because it has been more than 6 months since I graduated. I can't get an enternship because its been too long since I graduated and I can't get a regular job because I don't have experience. Go figure. My advice to everyone else graduating- do an externship.

This sounds like a lot like my story RNMariposa, but 6 months is not unrealistically a long time, things happen for God's sake!!!The reason i give them when they ask what i have been doing ever since graduation (which didn't felt that long to me), is that i was preparing for my NCLEX and i was searching for the right hospital to start my career at. I had this promising interview, yesterday, i loved everything, benefit is wonderful, so i am keeping my fingers crossed to hear their final decision. So something will happen soon,,,,stay strong my friend:)

I wish all of you guys luck! I start nursing school in the fall so I won't graduate until 2011..but I've been reading the posts in NJ/NY and being aware of how things are now..just in case they are the same way when I graduate.

I got "unofficially" accepted to Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing and I'm excited because our clinicals will be at Mountainside, Morristown, Overlook and St. Joseph's. I know nurses at Mountainside and Overlook and I plan on meeting and greeting EVERYONE at each hospital.

I've been reading that externships are super important so I plan on applying for them as soon as possible. I am also trying to work as a unit secretary or nursing assistant at one of the hospitals NOW so I can have half a foot in now (I was called back at Morristown..but it seems like they have a hiring freeze going on...).

I'm also single with no kids (atleast for now) and am more than willing and able to move. I've been to Texas and LOVED it so I am definitely not opposed to move there!! RNMariposa, what 3 states called you that wanted to hire you now?

I wish all of you guys luck. You WILL get a job soon!

Goodluck! :wink2:

i went to this job fair.

it was depressing. there are no jobs for new grads.

it's been 3 months since i graduated. 1 month since i passed the boards and i'm starting to get panicy.

I have applied to so many jobs.

i recomend roboform to keep applying.

anyone know why UMDNJ took over 'correctional' facilities? yes i would be willing to work in a jail as my first gig. i don't care.

i've applied to nursing homes, hospitals(public, private, VA), agencies and doctors offices. All with the same response. We're not hiring new grads right now...minimum of 1 year of experience. how am i supposed to get experience if no one will give me a shot.?.

of the graduating class of 60 or so people, i know of five people who have gotten work.

one was an lpn doing home care who just got an increase in pay/more challenging clients.

two moved out of state to PA

two were nurse externs at hospitals and are now RN's....

i too am kicking myself for not getting an externship.

I also was at this job fair and found sooooo disheartening.

It was the same response no matter which line you were in, sign your name give me your resume and we will contact you if anything comes up. As I sign my name I realize how many names are on the list. Its so frustrating!

Graduated in December, licensed in February, and no interviews. Got a call from Kessler made me think I had a shot have since called back and emailed and realize I am being ignored.

I dont know what else to do...I feel hopeless.
