new grad, cant get hired

by jojo19

Hi, I graduated school in december of 07 with a BSN and im having so much trouble finding a job in northern NJ. I passed my test and am waiting on my license. I have only had 2 interviews from numerous resumes ive submitted. It seems they all want experience. I did not go to school in NJ, so im thinking that the hospitals would rather take NJ schooled new graduates because that is was they are familiar with. Not really sure, anyone else having this problem, or can any one get me a job? its pretty frustrating talking to all my friends with jobs from Florida when im jobless
thanks

I'm not sure what to tell you. I live in FL and can't get a job (Dec grad too) but that's because I can't find anything to fit my husband's crazy work schedule since we have 2 young kids.

I'm actually planning to move back to NJ for a year before moving with all of my family to OH next year, so I'm hoping to find a job soon after I get there.

One thing: are you applying for GN positions? Because you will only be hired as a GN, or new RN that needs orientation, training, and preceptorship. Also, I found checking out all the hospitals' websites that are in my area and going to their employment section to look for open positions and submit resumes and applications online.

Check everything, check monster and career builder websites, check the newspaper, go the hospitals in person and talk to the nurse recruiter.

Good luck!

OMG SAME HERE!! I'm a new grad (Dec 07) in Southern Jersey and I applied to 7 places..and zero call backs.... I'm so depressed. I thought maybe because it's NJ so I applied to PA and NY license. I'm not sure whether it would help me or not but better than not trying I thought.
I'm not gonna give up.. At least you had 2 interviews!!

Maybe your age (if you are 23 ) might be a problem..
Where you live and how far you are willing to travel???

Nah. All they care about is if you have a pulse.

Come across the bridge to NYC. We always need nurses.

yeah im going to wait a little bit then start applying for my other state licenses also. I heard theres been alot of budget cuts in NJ so theyre hesitant to hire new grads, since it costs more money. I just kept on calling and be persistent to get a job interview, but I havent had any call backs from my initial ones. I dont know whats going on

Well if you are not far from Central NJ (Mercer County area.) the hospitals all need help. Just go to any of the web-sites and look at the listings. I am not sure how far away you live, but just my thought.

Is it just me? Traveling Agencies don't want anybody with 0 experience. They say at least 6+month..

ALL travel agencies require experience.
Think about it. When you're a travel nurse, you're expected to, and I quote this from someone else, "hit the floor running".
We as new grads can't do that, we need training and experience before we can go somewhere completely new and be on our own.

Actually 6 months is a surprise. All of them in my area require 1-2 years.
