Job for a student

Updated May 10, 2007 at 08:27 AM by hansen32

I just finished my MedSurg unit at school and am looking for a job in a hospital. I'm not proud. I know I'm a beginner. I thought there was a need for nurses - but when I went to Holy Name in Teaneck the day before yesterday they were more rude than I would have thought possible. I've done relatively well at school and have two recommendations from clinical professors as well as a series of employers I had before I started my nursing program. Am I missing something? What did I do wrong? I didn't expect them to hire me on the spot, but I did expect them to be courteous and professional.

What kind of position were you looking for? And yes, there's a need for nurses, but not always a need for ancillary staff. It's unacceptable that they were rude, but being a good student doesn't always automatically qualify you for a job either. They have to have a need that you could fill with your qualifications.

I'm looking for anything; for entry level, for CNA, for volunteer - hey, I'll mop floors to get started, clean toilets, hand out books from a cart, I'm up for it.. As I said I didn't expect instant hire but I was absolutely thrown for a loop by their brusqueness. I think I would probably never want work with a group that displays such a degree of unprofessional conduct - that's what makes me think there is something I'm not getting. A piece of critical information.

Are you a student at Holy Name? Did you call the school over there or the Hospital itself?
I have to say that I have had some contact with Holy Name Nursing school and I thought that they were VERY VERY Rude. I would say that they were more NASTY then RUDE.

Are you seeking employment as a new grad nurse???

At the Teaneck career fair, the Holy Name recruiters were very pleasant. However, I have heard about the rudeness/nastiness of the nurses in Holy Name from my wife who works there. Based on your experience with them, would you really want to work with nasty people? I think that it's not you who has a problem. Many more institutions besides HN exists. Why not give them a shot?

considered volunteering in a nursing home? There is agreat need there to fill water pitchers, cheer patients up, read to patients. Most nursing homes have volunteer directors that would be happy to help you. Then if they see you are doing a fine job, if a spot opens up, you may get first dibs.

I would consider working in a nursing home. (But I can't afford the volunteer part for too long. I have been at school FT for the last three years and I've sort of run out of all my resources.) I really, really need a job. A job that pays money. And I really, really want to work at a hospital. I guess if push comes to shove, though, I will just temp through the summer again. But I wish I didn't have to do that.

I know St. Joseph's in Paterson just hired a bunch of nursing students as Patient Care Associates (translation= nurse's aides).. Also, it might be a little late at this point, but did you consider looking into any externship programs for the summer?

I actually applied to Joe's, and to most of the other hosps. in in the area. I'm going to temp while I wait it out. But . . . disappointing? . . . yeah. I'm wretched. I'm not a nurse yet and I'm discouraged. How am I supposed to become the best I can be if I can't even get a job in the field?

You can always become a certified home health aide. Have you taken Nursing 1 yet?
