NLN PAX Exam...how bad is it?

Hey everyone! I will be applying for the graduating nursing class of 2012 this upcoming January (I will be going to NHCTC of Stratham which is now called Great Bay Community College and located in Portsmouth. I start some pre-reqs and co-reqs in January and hoping to get into the program that starts in Fall 2010.

I picked up the NLN PAX study guide and doing questions from each section for about an hour to 2 hours per day, and it appears I need a little more help in math than I thought.

How hard was the NLN PAX? When did you receive your scores? Do you have any tips for a rookie??

Thank you!

Oi, I can't say much but I heard there's a 2.5 - 3 yr. wait for the nursing program at GBCC. The reqs and co-reqs will help you though. I am going through the Red Cross LNA program at GBCC presently. If you don't get in to nursing school next year you may consider the LNA program. It will give you a leg up.

Good luck in all your endeavors!

PS I took the NLN in 2003 and failed. I didn't retest. Had kids instead and I'm now attempting my nursing career again!

I got into GBCC after a year wait, the first time around is b/c I failed my NLN. Sign up for the study group that is given, go on up to CAPS to sign up, there is another session in Oct, the person who teaches it, Dale, is a senior, and it helped me IMMENSELY. One thing to concentrate on of course is your percentages and fraction, decimals and ratios. There were a few geometry questions, but they were practically taken right out of the NLN book! BTW, I work in CAPS too, so any questions or fears, I have been there, so feel free!

niko - did you have all your sciences completed pre-acceptance? I am wondering how this affects acceptance rates. Also, did you have any other medical training?

Thanks so much girls for replying! 2.5-3 YEARS?!?! Omg, I think Im going to faint. Maybe its worth checking out UNH's program...?

Oh cool Niko, you work in CAPS? Thats pretty neat, I'll have to remember that when I am stuck with something I totally plan on attending that workshop. I am going to take my exam in December I think.

Are you still in the program?

My route is going to be to get my LPN in Manchester then plow on to my RN. The wait is faster if all your sciences and pre-reqs are done first. I think having your LNA is a good idea too.

Best of luck!

Hey ladies, so I called GBCC and this fall is up and next fall is filling up, so Gin84, I think I may do as you suggested and take the LNA course as well as my pre-reqs. I am also thinking of applying to UNH's nursing program for the fall of 2011. Which means I need to take my stupid SATs since I never took them in highschool. And work my butt off studying for the NLN PAX. The woman I spoke to from GBCC told me to apply for the program ASAP as space is filling up quick. So instead of taking my NLN PAX in December, Ill take it in November.

Gin84, how did you sign up for the LNA program? Do you not have to repeat Nursing 1 then?

Their is an evening LNA course through the Red Cross starting Oct 5th and you can probably still get in. Call them if you're seriously interested. You'll want to talk to Pam or Eileen.

I don't know about repeating Nursing 1, but it will definitely give you a leg up because you'll be familiar with working with patients and bedside manner.

Good luck! I love my LNA program thus far!

I am, a whopping 5 weeks into my first semester! Yeah, apply everywhere, I did, that way you just increase your chances of being accepted somewhere. Next fall can't be filling up, they don't even start to look at applications until the end of Feb when the deadline passes-make sure you talk to someone actually IN admissions. I had all my lab sciences done, actually had all my pre reqs either done or was working on them, then they added that new math class, something you don't have to worry about But getting A&P done is a huge helper, GBCC goes by a point system, and having your A&P done gets you an extra 20 points on your application. It takes most people about three years to complete the program, so don't sweat it at all!
