Question about UNLV

U.S.A. Nevada

Published

OK here goes... I took MATH 124 at UNLV and only got a C grade.

Problem one: I need a B grade.

Problem two: I already took the class three times (once I dropped and the other time I failed).

Problem three: UNLV only allows you to take the class twice to get a B grade. "a grade of B (3.00) or above must have been earned in either the first or second enrollment (an audit counts as an enrollment) in the following prerequisites course: Fundamentals of College Mathematics (MATH 120) or College Algebra (MATH 124)"

I was wondering if I'd be able to take MATH 120 and use it to fulfill this requirement? What do y'all think?

Hey,

Aww.. that's a lot of problem. I am applying for the Nursing program in the Summer of 2010. I will be finishing a couple more prerequisite in Spring at UNLV. It'll be my first time there!. Im sorry I dont have the answer for you, but Im sure 100% your pre-nursing counselor can tell you YES OR NO right on the bat.

I was wondering if you can tell me how competitive the Nursing program is at UNLV?... Im so worried about my chances. And how is the school? Why are you having such bad problems? I hope UNLV don't have some awful teachers that gives students too much of a hard time. Now Im hesitant if I want to transfer.. =/

For Moneyline702: You should definitely email your pre-nursing adviser @ UNLV cause I'm not 100% sure if I am right. I'm pretty sure you can take Math 120 and it'll count but it depends if your drop is an audit. If it is an audit it counts towards the two chances we have to get a B.

For khayemae: I'm planning on applying for the program for summer 2010 too! The nursing program is pretty competitive because they only accept 48 applicants a semester. Most people don't want to apply during summer so that's why I'm applying for summer lol because there is less competition which means a higher chance for me to get into the program. So far my experience with UNLV is pretty good. There are definitely some teachers that are rough but its up to us, the students, on how well we are going to adapt to them. Ultimately it is up to us if we pass or fail depending on how much we study and how dedicated we are to achieving our goals to become nurses.

Hope this helps! :)

Hey ... I sent you a message. Have you taken the Hesi yet?, Im so nervous about taking the rest of it.. sighh...

Hi Kaymae I can't reply to your message for some reason but I did see both of them. I have the same problem with the Hesi but I did pretty well with the harder vocab section so I'm pretty sure the grammar portion will be so much easier. To answer your question about how competitive I am...umm I don't really worry about anyone else besides my own grades. I haven't retaken any of my pre-req classes and I've done well so far. I am applying really soon for the summer program.

Hey, Lyngotnabac..

I did awful in the Vocab section. I was so upset that I was forced to take it.. so I just skimmed through them to get it over with. lol. Unlike you, I am very worried about other students grades. Their grades pretty much decides whether or not Im getting in or not. Unless I get all 100s, then I dont have to worry. I finished all my prerequisites and I have all A's except for Physio- B, all are taken once. I'm worried with my B.. and my Hesi scores are 80, 83, and 100,.... I really hope I did AT LEAST 75 on the grammar.. OR better!.... I live in California right now, so Im taking some of the General requirements online... and never been to UNLV, OR Vegas... so if EVER I get it, I'll be a loner. lol.

How did you know less people apply for the summer? that sounds interesting, although, it does make sense. I'd rather apply for fall myself, because there is no financial aid in the summer, and I still have to pay out of state tuition, meaning... 8thousand$$ more... but I just wanna finish asap...

I have applied this summer.. Sorry if I was asking too many private questions.. I just really wanted to know my chances... so I can plan accordingly. and you pretty much is the only Nursing student I know thus far. I applied to 3 other schools here in California but they're all 2 years long. =( and way way way way more competitive.. as in.. 500 people apply and only 40-50 get accepted..

hey there. I too am applying for summer semester and yes it is very competitive. I have been told all the signing sessions are filled so that is 80 applicants for the 48 spots. I applied last semester and didn't get in. I barely missed getting accepted but I was missing 2 classes. If you have only taken your classes once and have a good gpa and test scores you should be ok. My friend got in last semester and was missing a class but had stellar scores in everything else. You can calculate your score by printing out the hesi score sheet on the nursing website. That helped me alot in figuring out where I stand. But from what you say it sounds like you are in a good spot to get in! Good luck:-)

Hmm.. Im not sure if I understood you correctly. You said only 80 people can apply this Summer 2010? so the reason why you didn't get in last sem was bcoz you were missing 2 classes?. I was going to apply this Spring 2010, but I was told I need to take classes at UNLV in order to apply, although I'm done with all my pre-requisites. Kinda confusing coz the website said, for transfer student who's above 3.0 may apply, and bellow 3.0 will have to take classes at UNLV. and I have above 3.0... oh well, I'm under the pre-nursing advisers so I'll have to listen to them, they know they're stuff, so no worries. So were you able to sign up for summer 2010 before they told you it was filled? Thanks for the kind remarks. I feel better now.. hehehe.. But... still.. dont wanna keep my hopes to high!.... I hate the feeling of disappointment...

hello again. I didn't mean to suggest that only 80 people can apply. I was told there are 8 signing sessions and they hold about 10 people per session. And i didn't get in because my points were lower due to the fact I was missing 2 classes. But there were alot of students in the same position I was in but they did get in because they may have had a higher gpa or test score. It is all about the points you have. It is one of those things that it always depends on the pool of students who apply each semester. And i know how you feel....disappointment is not fun! :-) It was hard when i didn't get in but I am determined to keep going. Hopefully now that I am all done with my classes I will have a better shot. We shall see:-)

Hmmm.. so it's all about the scores ah.... This is making me more and more nervous! lol.. I'm taking the Hesi Grammar portion next week!.... If I get a 90 minimum, Im going to celebrate by buying myself an apple laptop... If not... well.. I have one more chance to take the exam, and apply in Fall. Hmmm... they have 8 sessions strictly? so that would mean... 80 people can only apply.. sorry if Im having trouble comprehending. Yeahh.. I hope all the smart people decide to apply in the Fall! smart people need summer break! lol.

Goodluck to us! =)

the grammer portion of the test was not bad at all. I keep hearing people say how tough it was but I scored at 93. It is rather easy. And i need all the luck I can get. So far the people i have spoken to have between a 90 and a 98. I am not sure if anyone has a score higher than that. A guy I know had the highest score last semester. He got into the program with a 103. So it is really competitive. I can only hope the 2nd time around will prove positive! Good luck on your test.

how can you score 103 on the Hesi??... Great job btw!! =] well hopefully my 80s would get me through.... Sighhh.... I need all the luck too!! The only way I can score an overall 90 on the Hesi is if I get a 100 in the Grammar... which I doubt! lol.. I mean.. the math portion is easy coz you can test your answers.. Grammar can sometime throw you off.. Im still a little dizzy trying to learn Lie and lay! haha! well... fingers crossed!!...

Did they tell you not to contact the Nursing Department regarding checking your application??
