Patients are angry in Nevada, how do I respond?

U.S.A. Nevada

I posted a message "Please come and sign our petition to lower the patient-to-nurse ratio" in the Las Vegas Review Journal's (Las Vegas Newspaper) message board.

I am getting some bad feedback from the local people here:

That would require that some patients get absolutely NO nursing care or denied admittance to hospitals! Should we send the patients to California? I don't think so. Nope, I would never sign such a petition to give my fellow Las Vegans no nursing care at all.

--------

I found that the nurse on duty was responsible for , not 4 rooms like I expected, but 20 double occupancy rooms . Needless to say I was a bit angery.

---------

Obviously, the hospitals are trying to get R.N.'s. Either there aren't any to hire or they plain out don't want to work. I believe it is referred to as a nursing shortage. huh?

---------

Nursing is a sham most of the time. Many of the nurses do little more than sit at a little desk and work on paperwork.

Having had numerous encounters with them over the last few years, I have become somewhat of an expert. Don't ask for anything that takes up their time. My dad requested a sponge bath after being there nearly a week. He was nearly laughed out of the hospital. They don't do that.

---------

They educate the family members on where ice can be found and where the necessities are. After that, the patient is on their own. The nurse will show up for medications or to check vitals..nothing more. Don't ask for an extra pillow or blanket. That is out of the question. Patient load..if that is the problem, should be looked at. The nurses today have the same attitude as flight attendants..Don't bother me, I am too d**n busy

---------

This is only part of their responses. I think we are looked upon like we are lazy. Do you believe it? I know for myself that I work my but off and hardly ever stop more than 10 minutes in a 12 hour shift to eat. If anyone is interested in responding to some of their complaints, go to:

I think you have to sign up for the eforum. It's under locals.

Thanks,

Too bad your father didn't get a bath for a week...and WHERE were the family members?....Flight attendents are hired soley to provide comfort for passengers....Nurses on the other hand...our primary goal is to affect a positive healthcare outcome for the patient....Ignorantly, the general public believes this includes comfort measures like ice, pillows and bedbaths....Well, let me educate you..we are responsible for monitoring the progress of the reacovery of our patients.....this includes medications, procedures, treatments and MOST of all..astute monitoring looking for subtle changes in patient conditions that can impact recovery, life and death issues...this is not a trivial responsibility...we MUST document everything because the next shift of caregivers and DR. MUST know these things...as they have major impacts on pt outcomes....getting ice and pillows do NOT impact outcomes...as far as paper work....thank your medicare and HMO's for that one, they require reams on repetitive paper work which without it, no one gets paid...including YOUR hospital bills!..Nurses must document everything they do with a rational OR YOUR insurance will not pay. Unfortunatly, the public is ignorant of the impact nursing care has on them, thank the medical shows like ER for that...Nursing care's primary focus is keeping you alive, not comfortable....for that, you can thank HMO's. your hospital's CEO who makes 6-7 digit salaries, but can't find enough money to hire enough nurses and ancillary staff to keep you alive and comfortable....it is a fact of life. Sorry, but when a critical pt is going bad, and l have 8-10 pt's who are very ill, ice, pillows and baths are NOT a priority.....and your blame is sorely misplaced.......LR

Ohhh!! GOOD response, Lrae!!!

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You --- ALL OF YOU!!!

You're writing is soooooo great. One good thing about nursing, it teaches you how to be a great writer.

I could just kiss you all!

I tried to register, and for some reason couldn't get the registration to work...never had that happen to me before.

I'll try later and use a different name...frustrating. There were some people I definitely wanted to address.

I had the same problem registering. You will get an email from the review journal then you can log on.

Thanks,

Nurse Nevada

I received a notice from someone who runs a board like this at Nevada USA. He invited me to post on his board. He also put a news flash at the top of his board with a link to the petition site. It's so great to get help. The board link is:
