Hard to find work as a new grad in Las Vegas

U.S.A. Nevada

Published

I graduated in August from a school in Texas and passed the NCLEX at the end of September. I just recently moved to Las Vegas and cannot find any work! I have applied for the only new grad position I've seen so far (the St. Rose program), but didn't get in.. I am applying for every RN job out there, and i just keep getting rejection emails. Not even one call back for an interview. I don't know what to do! Why is it like this out here? Has this been a big problem for other new grads? Any ideas on what I can be doing? Help!

Don't think that it is you. Unemployment is the highest in the country here. I Graduated May (in Vegas), took the NCLEX July and started looking for a job. I was getting depressed after a month of applying for anything for an RN and getting rejection letters by the dozen. In school we were told how to get a job is to go and see the Nurse Managers. I did that with no success. I then began to taking my resume to the HR departments with still no success. Finally, I made a folder with my resume, letters of recommendation, skills checklist, final semester evaluations and even made a business card. I went in and finally got to see a Nurse Recruiter in HR. I received a call back about a week later. The next day I took the NCB test, interviewed with a Nurse Manager and signed papers the same day. Long story short; market yourself. Stand out in the crowd. IMHO I don't think just applying online will get you anywhere.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice!

New graduate programs are in the mist of hiring right now. I know of ten people that just got hired into new graduate programs here in Vegas, but applied over a month ago.

I would market yourself for sure by doing what the previous posted did as well as get: ACLS, PALs, and anything else you can afford while waiting. Even a telemetry certificate means you have taken the time to do something that the company that hires you doesn't have to fork out the money for. Its funny because this isn't a secret at all, yet no one does it.

Thanks. I saw those new grad positions a while ago, but didn't get in cuz I hadn't taken NCLEX yet..
