Wassup SockMonkey!! I'll be starting in January too, did you buy your books yet? I'm just wondering. Are they available now? Haven't been to bookstore.

Hi!!! I have NOT bought my books yet, but they are in. I have been in the bookstore 3 times now asking if financial aid has submitted my book award yet and they haven't. It's supposed to come early for us RN folk! I really need them too because I'm taking the pre-course covering math and care plans (not sure I can mention the instructor's name on here, but she spoke at orientation). She asked us today if we've been studying for 101 yet!!! Plus we need them for a reference for her class. *sigh* So I will continue to hound both the bookstore and financial aid....

Hello people,

I just survived the 1st semester at CSN. You are in for a bumpy road. Remember the day you got so excited because of your phone call and picking up your letter? Well reality is about to smack you. Make good friends like I did and stick together it will be harder on you if you try to do it alone. I wish you all the best 1st semester. Keep your eye on the prize. If nobody told you C's get degrees shoot for an A but don't beat yourself up for a B or a C. A recruiter is not going to care whether you got an A or C in Nurs 101.

Yeah! Best of luck to you all! I also just finished out my 1st semester and it was a rocky boat! We all stuck together and cried (literally) on each others shoulders. It really is a great program with great instructors. Make sure you keep up on your reading!

Hey Sockmonkey, goodluck with financial aid. Hang in there, you'll get your money somehow. I remember that instructor at the orientation, she seems nice. I'd probably buy my books next week or 1st week of Jan, it's just shocking on how much books cost nowadays.

To VegasEMT, thanks for the heads up. But, I have been WARNED by various people in the past. CSN nursing program is taught just like a BSN program would be, but with less classes. It does smack people in the face when they get into the program! It's probably because many people think that it's just an ADN program, that it wouldn't be hard? Boy, do they get a reality check once they start it!! BTW, is there a study group anywhere?

To Littlebugger, thanks for the luck! We're all gonna need it, I'm sure. And yes, tears will be cried all throughout semesters (I hear). Is there a study group or something to help us out, during the semester? Or we're pretty much on our own to find one?

Oh and I just read the postings here so I will put my 2 cents in. Yes 101 and Pharmacology are hard, but not impossible. Don't get all worked up and anxious about what people say about this program. If you stay organized and read the material (and there is more than you can possibly read in the time you get) you will do just fine. With that being said, and I have mentioned this before in other blogs, I am the president of CSN Student Nurses' Association. We talked to you at your orientation ( I was vice president at the time) and told you about the SNA. We are planning to hold study and mentoring sessions every Friday this Spring. One session in the daytime and one in the evening for those that work.

Again, don't feel like you can not do this. People in my class worked full time and still made it through (barely) but they did it. We (CSN SNA) are there to support you in any way we can. I will be more than happy to meet or talk to anyone about the best way to organize yourself with studying because it does matter how you stay organized.

If you do ANYTHING this new year, you should definately come to the state convention at CSN West Charleston on January 16th from 0700 till 1800, it will cost $50 at the door and will be the best $50 you have EVER spent in your life. You will learn test taking strategies for the NCLEX style tests, which all the tests in first semester are NCLEX, and Sylvia Rayfield the author of Pharmacology Made Insanely Easy will do a seminar on Pharmacology. Trust me, even if you have experience with meds, you will benefit from this because Pharmacology is difficult. You can see the flyer at www.nvsna.org under the tab named "convention".

Also, the SNA will be hosting the back pack station like we do every semester just outside the WC bookstore from January 19-22 from 0700 to 2000. You can earn 5 points for every 4 hours you volunteer that goes toward earning extra credit for ALL clinical/didactic courses like 101, 115, 243, etc...As a member you can participate with very minimum time away from studying and get 4 points toward your grade. It can LITERALLY move you up an entire letter grade, it has been done. If you are interested in becoming an officer which requires only a bit more time, you are eligible for 6 points extra credit at the end of the semester and trust me it really helps.

Ok well that was way too much information and I apologize for being long winded but there is a ton of information that is helpful to you new students you just have to look in the right place...like the CSN SNA!

yeah for sure..how far ahead of time did it take you to get accepted into the program? did you have to take tests?? thanks

Other important details? Try to get into Biol 189 ASAP. It fills up quickly and the prereq for your prereqs. There are some very helpful people on this site, so if you hear a rumor about getting into the program in Biol 189 (which you will) ask someone here about it and there will be someone who can set you straight!
