Any colleges near Las Vegas with a waiting list?

Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum. I live in Michigan but may be moving to Las Vegas next year. I'm currently taking my pre-req's at a community college in Michigan. Does anyone know if there are any colleges in Nevada (mainly near las vegas) that has a waiting list instead of the traditional scoring by GPA/Test scores to get into their program?

Also does Las Vegas have a community college? What are my options of schools for my RN degree? I've searched and all I can find is UNLV.

Hey Pogi,

I actually was offered an interview here in the next couple of days and am a bit unsure about what to expect. Being that this program is a BSN program costing around 50K, did you find it hard to obtain loans? I living In northern California and I am just contemplating all my options right now. Secondly, I was wondering how you liked the program being that it's blocked scheduled...Was housing a problem? Did you live on campus?

I don't know if i should hold out for a CA school...Western's application is due NOV this year but the actually program doesn't begin until next NOv: If I go to USN for the BSN program, I'd have two more months to finish the program come NOV 2010. I don't know...Just so many question...Could you reply..as well as anyone who has information for me ?

Nevada State College passed their provisional status and are fully accredited now. They are also quietly starting a part time program in the fall with anyone who got wait listed from the regular track program. I was an advisor at NSC, so I know a little bit about most of the schools, and the most important thing to consider is what you want to do, and what degree you want to graduate with. St Rose Siena is cutting down on associate degree hiring because they are trying to get Magnet Recognition and if you ever wanted to be a Clark County School Nurse you will need a bachelors. If you want to ever go on to grade school its usually easier to get a bachelors in one shot than piecing it together from different schools.

That being said, there are lots of programs, even bachelor programs out there and they all have different pre-req requirements, so there is no one perfect school.

I personally chose Nevada State because I already have a bachelors degree so their accelerated program of only 12 months was perfect for me, and I wasn't interested in paying 40k per year for my education.

Hey Pogi,

SOrry didn't reply to you...I don't know how exactly to private message someone so struggled with it and finally gave up! I had my interview this past Wednesday...Although the message was a bit late but I really appreciate your response. I had to fly all the way from Sacramento, CA within 24's notice..cost me an arm and a leg...($360 to be exact) just to go down there for a period of 24 hours. I had work and school the very next morning so I flew right back the night of the interview. Now its just a matter of time....

The interview was great over all...I love the classroom setting, and location. Two others that I plan to share a place with looked into apartments and found Broadstone Agave about a mile from campus...Don't know if that's an ideal place but we figured we received a reasonable quote so took it...I think it was a little over nine-hundred for a three bedroom unit. Do you know of any places around there you'd recommend?

Hi SnowApple,Glad your interview went well. A lot of my classmates stayed at Broadstone and thought it was better than other apts in the area. They are in better shape than the others. The location is ideal. I wouldn't want to live too far from campus, especially since you have to be at school by 8am. I lived at home while in school, and while I was still in Henderson, it took me almost 30 minutes to get to class with the morning traffic. There are other apts along Green Valley Parkway, like Wildhorse. It is also about a mile from campus. However, from what I have heard, Broadstone is better! Glad you liked the school!

The College of Southern Nevada is not a hard school to get into, perhaps the nursing program is hard to get into? I had it easier than most, however, I do have God on my side; I am truly blessed by Him in that sense.

But....I am probably the poorest RN student/single mom prior to the start of the program you have ever known. lol.

You must take the classes in a strategic sense. Many students actually listen to the "dragon lady" (nursing adviser at a csn campus) who is so discouraging to 9/10 people who see her-- you know who I am talking about! lol!

APPLY, APPLY, APPLY! Many do not apply due to a lack of points & thanks to what she tells them, I got in!

Take all the required classes first, take the TEAS test early and often if you need to-- it is only allowed every 6months but is good for 5 years, work on classes that are extra points with required courses if you can fit them in!

***The TEAS test results that you want for admission to the semester of choice must be planned out according to application deadline so make sure you read the small print about when you can retake it and when the scheduled test is for the submission deadline! No, you cannot take it at NSC and use it for CSN if you did not pass it 2 months earlier. You must wait the whole 6 months.

As for Apollo, I went to their orientation, and I could not get a straight answer from them about my prerequisites counting towards their first and second semester. I did finally get someone to admit that they had never had anyone start in their 3rd semester. I found that to be money hungry. That is my polite way of saying NO WAY.

I watched for a while of them collecting $35 per person to sit for their "exam" on the computer. They had to schedule it and pay on the spot. There was about 50 people there and they have these orientations 2-3 times per week. Apollo was making money hand over fists just testing these people. They start their program 3 times per year and only choose a handful of students to attend each program. You do the math.

It wasn't just the money, it was my time. I was in spring semester finishing a&p II and Micro, the last of all required for CSN, why would I want to repeat it and pay 3x the cost? Not to mention, learning how to do BP and make a bed when I already know that too? (experienced) At their beck and call? Monday through Friday for $45,000.00? I would be bored out of my mind for the first 9 months!

I did not give them my money but you can if you want to.

Nevada State has a rep for not passing the NCLEX. It is a school I have heard that some teachers do and some do not make you learn and work hard enough to pass. Risky if you ask me.
