NSC NCLEX pass rate?

Hi, I'm new to the site and considering applying to NSC for their accelerated BSN program. Does anyone know or know how to find out what percentage of their graduates pass the NCLEX?

I'm having some second thoughts about NSC now that I know they only have provisional approval from the state board of nursing and that it's essentially a one building school. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it gives me pause.

I'd appreciate any facts, advice or guidance.

I would suggest that you consider the established BSN programs (UNR, UNLV) and look into their success rates. (Ask yourself if their pass/fail rates are what you'd expect of long established, well-funded operations.) It's possible the new guys on the block might be more motivated to succeed, or more particularly to see you succeed. They know they are under scrutiny, by the State Board and other credentialing bodies. I don't know much about NSC, but if I was shopping for a program, I'd look at the faculty, their degrees, whether they've published or gotten grants funded. I'm always encouraged when I see that individual faculty members have web pages posted that make it easy for you to measure their professional accomplishments. And I'm suspicious if none of the faculty in a major department have individual webpages.

I will tell you for comparison that my alma mater was in the 90% success range for many decades (until they dropped the undergrad program...) and the year I graduated, my class hit a grand slam. No failures.

Please forgive my long answer to your straightforward question.

NSC has just graduated their 1st class this Spring of '05 (I asked the same thing), so the stat remains to be seen. I decided to apply to NSC & take my chances, as I looked at UNLV & was going to enter.
Why I decided to go w/NSC: I was just finishing my 2nd & final go at Micro (for the required "B") & decided that UNLV was not the program for me (I managed a B-, but know I could have possibly gotten it changed if I spoke w/the prof). UNLV has very high standards & a lot of students. I do not want to once again get lost in the shuffle of students in a well-established program.

I went to NSC & spoke to an administrator. She was very nice & answered all my questions. She even took the time to show me their new lab. It was a good size, fairly-well stocked (and new manniquins, beds, ect) & big for a new lab & it has a conference rm. It is in a modular though (not a problem for me). I liked it much better then UNLV's lab.

Also: I have spoken to other NSC students & they have really liked the program. I find students are the best determinate of how good a school is.

I have applied for the Fall 05 accelerated program, but they seem to be having some difficulty getting the notifications sent out. They're about 2 weeks late. I'll let you know if I get accepted and decide to go. Thanks for your help!

I wanted to tell u: something got fouled up in the notifications & when I called on the 29th they were working feverishly to get them out. I got my notification July 1 & I got accepted! YEAH! :happy dance:

Let me know what happens! I hope we both are accepted!

I am not focusing my respone just on your statement, but on many other statements made by other people. I wanted to respond to your statement about UNLV. It really bothers me when people say that UNLV has too high of standards for their nursing program. Would you rather have a nurse at your bedside who went to UNLV and had high passes in all of their most important classes, or would you rather have a nurse who went to a school who basically just passed by to get their nursing degree. Yes UNLV may have high standards but that person will be responsible for someones life someday and by golly they better have learned something in college; hence, having high standards is a good thing.

sister mike: I'm sorry if you feel that everyone thinks "UNLV has too high of standards." Yes, I do want a nurse at my bedside that knows their stuff. And, what you said could be misunderstood as offensive also (would you rather have a nurse who went to a school who basically just passed by to get their nursing degree). Every program is different & has standards that the individual student feel will meet their personal needs.

Now, in defense of my own reasoning to my response: If you read my post more closely, you would see that I was only stating as to why I made the choice that I made. "UNLV was not the program for me." I gave the pro's & con's as to how I came to my decision.

Yes, UNLV does have an excellent program & I apologize if you feel that I showed UNLV in an unfavorable light. Choosing the school that one decides to go to is an intensely personal decision. BTW: I am an alumni of UNLV & graduated this spring w/my BS in Health Ed. So I do feel the UNLV is an excellent school & I feel that I grew as a person while going there. I personally feel that I grew enough as a person to come to the decision that I came to. And believe me, it wasn't easy. I love UNLV & would recommend anyone to go there for top-notch education at a reasonable cost. However, for myself I feel I have made the right decision for nursing school.

I just worked with an ICU nurse the other day who said that NSC's first NCLEX pass rate was in the 60's. I don't know how to find out what the pass rates are. When you look on the NV BON website, the most current ones (the last time I looked) are from a few years ago. Before I started the UNLV nursing program, I asked an advisor at UNLV what their pass rate was, I was told that it was "subjective." I never got a straight answer. I guess you could call the NV BON. WOW... that's awful!
I know that UNLV (someone told me this that was a student there) that they were required to take a 5 day NCLEX Prep class (1wk prior to grad I think) for the Aug 05 class that graduated. They were the 1st class required to take it. AND they HAD to pass or not receive their degree (everyone passed, luckily, although this student stated that she felt that even if someone did fail, they would probably pass or re-test them anyway, despite this, b/c they were the 1st class that had to take and pass it w/little to no warning). All semesters r now required to test for this every semester & pass.

Oh & BTW: NSC is also required to test & pass ATI (we need a 70% and, luckily, we have another chance if we fail the 1st time, but then we have to get a 90% to pass in order to move forward). As for NCLEX Pass rates, I have no idea in general how the students r doing (I hear that our 1st class of accelerated students r doing well so far, so we'll see).

I still LOVE this program & find it refreshing to be in a class of college-educated students around my age (I'm 40) (most are in their 30's & 40's). Everyone is great & so motivated! Most of us have kids & spouses to worry about. Many r still working too.
