Also I am prepping for state boards? any advice would be great. I am taking Kaplan just trying to do the best I can.
Mr. Vegas RN
I live in Las Vegas. I applied at a new hospital & was told that I needed to apply at its sister hospital because they do not offer any training for new grads. I applied for positions at the sister hospitals, only to see in the job posting that at least 1 year of experience was required. ***? Also, the entire time that I was in nursing school, there was ONE nurse manager from St. Rose Dominican ICU that came in to speak about her unit & encourage new grads to apply! I worked at St. Rose DeLima as a nurse apprentice (student nurse) and my nurse manager was busy going to places like Houston & Japan to recruit nurses...forget about the locals! One day, I ran into her in the hall & she told me, "I was supposed to go to UNLV today to speak with the 5th semester students about St. Rose, but the traffic is too bad, so I changed my mind." Now, I mentioned that I worked at St. Rose, so you might ask why I did not return. I did not pass NCLEX, so I spent time studying for it. Now, I am an RN, and I might go back to St. Rose, if they'll have me . Good luck to you.

I am willing to admit when I am wrong, and I am not afraid to ask questions. I think if you have that attitude you will always be ok. I have a job interview with sunrise monday. I am sure they would not be hiring new grads into their program unless they had the means to be sure you were competent and ready by the end of it. I feel that in the long run once I figure it all out this will be a great place to work. There is a lot of work to be done here. I try to stay optimistic. Knowing many people come onto this site to vent a bad day they had. The fact is we all have bad days. We have a stressful profession. If you never take the bull by the horns and try even if its as scary as hell you will never know what you can do. I bet that those guys storming the beach at Normandy were scared to death, the odds against them surviving were huge, but some made it across! I will keep you all posted on my job search saga. I am sure that the same problems nurses face here are the same as what I dealt with in Colorado, the difference is I have learned how Colorado does things. I am still trying to figure out how to get to the grocery store here. If the job sounds legit I say "bring it on!"
good luck in school guys! thanks for the encouragement and help!
I have an interview tomorrow with Spring Valley hospital, which is part of the Valley health system. I will keep you posted on how it goes. I have a list of questions given to my class by an awesome 4th semester instructor. They cover everything!

I took Kaplan & I also did practice questions from their CD, I used Mosby's Review Cards for NCLEX-RN, & I used the Saunders CD for practice questions. Also, check out the NCLEX forum on this site, it can be pretty helpful. When are you taking your test?

Mr. Vegas RN
Hi there,
I am a new grad also; just got hired at Mountainview Hospital (mountainview is Sunrise's sister hospital)--they have a "rolling" hiring for new grads (not all at once, like the Valley hospitals) Valley hires new grads also.
If you haven't taken the NCLEX yet, I have 2 books I would be glad to sell you for $20 (I paid around $90 for them) All have CD's, no writing. I passed the NCLEX, 2 weeks ago, by studying from them, in 75 questions flat.
The Kaplan book is really good.
Good luck, keep us posted on your job search.

Hi! Well, I just got home from my interview at Spring Valley. It's a nice hospital. I interviewed for Med. Surg. There were 3 nurse managers present--one from each Med. Surg unit in the hospital (looked overwhelming, but really wasn't). First let me say that they put new grads through a 3 month orientation, which sounds like it may be quite a bit of classtime, in addition to floor time. Anyway, the last orientation class just started in June & the next one is not until September. I asked if one were offered a position there, could they start working before the September orientation class. I was told, "Well, I won't say no, but I cannot guarantee it, because it would be outside the frame of things." Ok. Along with the training course comes a 2 year contract to work for the hospital, more info regarding this can be obtained from the nurse recruiter, Tess at 702-894-5572. The hospitals of the Valley health system that do this training are Summerlin, Spring Valley, & Valley. Desert Springs is part of the Valley health system, but does not do that training. The ratios are 7:1 on days (may "in a rare case" get 8" & it's 8:1 on nights, again, may get up to 9 "on a rare occasion").
The floor is a mix of LPN's, RN's, & CNA's. The manager told me to pass this on, "When/if you interview, be prepared to answer the question: if you could be a kitchen appliance, what would you be, & why?" Oooookkkk.
I was told that they needed to interview others next Tuesday & Wednesday, then the recruiter would get back to me with their decision.

Mountainview...cool. That was my next place to apply. How long did it take them to get back to you & let you know that you were hired?

That is funny! I applied to Spring Valley and got an offer the next day from Tess. I really like it there. I thought that the interview was very professional and they had a good new grad program. Mountainview let me know as soon as I got my IP number, that they were offerieng me a job. I only wanted to work at Mountainview since I had worked there before as a pharmacy technician for 2 years. But, I hope you get an offer at Spring Valley, it seemed like a growing hospital, and a nice opportunity...By the way, which appliance did you say you were? I said a mortar and pestel...the questions they ask during the interview are interesting...

I said a range. If they offer me the position, I doubt I will take it because of the 2 year contract. The unit was very nice, & the managers were nice. My husband & I are planning to move once he finishes school, in May. Their ratios are much better than their sister hospital, Valley. I am taking faxing my application to Mountain View tomorrow. What unit do you work on?
