New Grad - Possibly Moving to Las Vegas

by urban22

Hello!

I'm a new grad from Chicago and I've been thinking about moving to Las Vegas. I've heard from some people here that UMC is a good place to apply for new grads. Would anyone be able to give me more info about:

- the type of charting UMC uses (is it paperless?)
- how their new grad orientation works and how long is it
- how paging works in regard to hospital staff (just wondering b/c one of my clincal hosp used a texting program)
- do they provide any relocation assistance and what the starting salary is for a new grad

Any help on any of these questions would be really appreciated! And if there are other hospitals also good for new grads, pls mention, thanks!!

I'm sorry I can't give you any advice dealing with UMC....I'm just barely starting the nursing program next week! But what I CAN tell you is : you won't want to live in the area around UMC! Just be prepared to drive a distance to get to work if you want to live in a good neighborhood! Good luck getting the info you need! And good luck with the move (if you decide to make it)!

I wouldn't move to Las Vegas, this city is awful....research this area thoroughly before making your move.

I just graduated from the nursing program and I also heard that UMC is having a hiring freeze, which is ironic because I've been scouring the paper for jobs and UMC has a lot of ads out - go figure...

I applied for a newly posted (01/09/09) New Grad position with them but within a day I received a response that said 'although you meet our minimum requirements, you have not been selected for the position' (I just checked and they still have the position posted).

That being said, I did my med/surg clinical rotation there and I enjoyed it. Oh and they did their charting on paper

Kizzykatlove mentioned North Vista or Sunrise....but I've also applied there and got a 'WE DO NOT HAVE NEW GRADUATE POSITIONS AT THIS TIME'...*sigh*

Good luck deciding!

Hey! I know this was posted at the beginning of the year, but I was curious as to what you decided to do! Did you move to Las Vegas? And were you able to find a job? I graduate in May and am unsure as to when to start looking for a job to be honest. I've looked online and seen openings at a few of the hospitals out there. I'm not too familiar with how searching and applying for new grad programs works, all I know is that I'd like to hopefully move out there in May or June 2010. I'm just now reading a lot about how new nurses are having a hard time finding jobs... Thanks!
