Depends on which hospital you are looking at. UMC starts out at a little over $21 an hour; however, UMC has AWESOME benefits (and $21 is pretty good for a county hospital). However, I think the other hospitals start you out between $22 - $25 an hour. I've heard St. Rose will start their new grads out at even higher than $25 for certain departments.

I am still a nursing student, so this info. is all from speaking to friends who have graduated. There was a nurse in one of my chemistry classes this past summer semester (she was going back for her BSN), and she started working approx. 3 years ago as a nurse and she had said Desert Springs started her out at $22 an hour. That was 3 years ago, so I am sure starting wages have increased somewhat since then.

yes thats true there are hospitals laying off RN's and it's usually the new grads because they have no seniority.... and also a great deal of hospitals are cutting down hiring new grads to one or two new grads a year... the hospitals are tightening up their belts in alot of ways.....

i hear that UMC hires alot of new grads... also sunrise.... i have heard st rose and the valley health system are cutting back on new hires...

hang in there you will get a job

That's crazy to think that nurses are getting laid off. With the long standing shortage of nurses already, wouldn't that impact patient safety? I mean, there's already not enough staffing and now they are laying nurses off?? That makes no sense.

well , the ecomony is in a recession , people are not having elective surgies as much anymore , they don't want to take time off of their jobs, the hospital's census's are dropping .. i heard centennial hills census was very low and the RN's are getting cancelled and laid off ... people are not visiting vegas like they use to....

the hospitals are tightening their belts and not hiring like they use to... they are keeping the staff they have and maybe laying off the the newest hires.. which are usually new grads...

nursing is not recession proof.. if the pt's are not coming ( esp in vegas ) then the census drops in the hospitals and nurses get called off....

sad but true... i am grateful everyday i have a job .. because many donot....

no i don't think so.. as long as you can sign RN after your name... you may want to try north vista and see if they hire new grads....

Yes, I agree with your statements. I heard at some places in cali have started to slow down with hiring nurses in the middle of last year or maybe earlier? ... and as for nevada, it has been seriously slowing down. Actually, I think it was just past August this year that, the NV board of nursing held a special meeting about recent NV grads that reported/complained about NOT getting hired for RN positions in southern nevada.... I have heard of this in sept. and frankly, most of the people that I know that graduated from NV have MOVED out of state! Things are just bad, and it's been predicted it's going to be worse next year for all states. . . nursing is not recession proof and a lot more people are finding that out everyday ... sad really, we all used to think that teaching, stockbrokers etc... are good fields! I guess everyone needs a PHd nowadays just to keep a JOB!

It's really just about money... that's where it comes down to. ALL states need nurses (there's ALWAYS going to be a nursing shortage) --- >> this fact is never going to go away... the issue really is, HOW to pay nurses ?? ..... when everyone's broke, the hiring process gets prioritize... nurses with MORE experience tend to keep their jobs or have higher chances of getting hired. The rest of the recent grads and RN's w/ provisional licenses get sacrificed... although, there are STILL other states who hire RN's who graduated from " out-of-state provisional schools "... the concern really is, for HOW LONG ?? Although, I still choose to think positively for now, but I really hope that everything gets better soon for the U.S. !! We can only hope . . . .
