need help, Nevada RN new grad base rate???

yes nevada plates i agree and wish i said it as well as you.... las vegas just dosen't have the visitors it did in the past.. or even 6 mos ago.... people just arn't traveling and having the money to spend gambling like they did last year..... surgeries are down and people would rather work than have an elective surgery ... esp with the holidays coming up...

i just pray the ecomony picks up and people come back to vegas.... so many of the new grads can get jobs.. and dkeep them.... i know many friends who moved to different states to work , one friend moved to alaska .. and from what i hear loves it and makes good many...

let's keep praying this recession will pass...

I agree with what is being said but I still think that with hospitals not hiring nurses due to economic reasons, the existing staff at some hospitals might continue to have high patient ratios and that will compromise patient safety. I know everything is money...money...money.
The reason I posted in this forum is because I plan on moving to Las Vegas once I graduate (I now live in Colorado). I'm trying to get a feel for the healthcare climate here. And yes...once we are back on solid economic ground, I hope hospitals start to hire again! There are too many people spending alot of money to get their nursing education!!

Frankly, I don't think hospitals care about "high patient ratios" to begin with... it is a bit rare to find hospitals that really "care" . . . . In this economy, I wonder if there are still any left??

Ya know, just this past summer, when I was re-taking a class, this one girl was telling me that she was taking pre-req classes for both nursing and pharmacy (she wants to be in the medical field either way, I guess she was worried about not getting accepted into a nursing program, at least she has a back up plan?) . . . I suppose pharmacy was once very big in demand back in late '90's early 2000's and it was predicted to be one of the HOT jobs & recession proof careers back then... I guess not so much now. . .

My point is, I wonder if nursing will also be a fad?? Especially, if this failing economy DRAGS on for a few more years?? EWWW!

i heard about this, too. i went to NV state board meeting last month and the board officials were talking about nursing students in vegas who move out of state once they graduate. they said that NV has the highest need for nurses amongst 50 states but if the nursing graduates just come here to study then leave, they'll never solve the shortage crisis.

as much as i completely understand and agree with them, i also understand why these graduates are moving out in the first place. if hospitals in the valley won't give us a chance, then we'll try our luck somewhere else.

maybe the NV nursing board can encourage hospitals or facilities to give hiring preference to nurses who reside in vegas longer. for example, if nurse A is from vegas and has 8 months experience in medsurg and nurse B is from ohio with 2 yrs experience in medsurg, nurse A should have more chances of getting hired. it's true that 2 yrs of experience is something as compared to an 8 months experience but how can we encourage nursing students to stay?

I've been hearing about this ever since I moved to NV, but the truth is, HR in all hospitals around Vegas are dragging their feet on nurse recruitment BEFORE this economic crisis, it's like the hospital administrators don't know what's up or down?? funny. . .

Nothing really. . . just keep with our education and hopefully advance more of it and move INTO states were we'll get more appreciation .... the worse case scenario for NV is, their southern NV nurses walk out and the doctors are left to fend for themselves! Maybe then, they'll wake up and these hospitals start hiring recent new grads. I doubt that anyone's listening though. . .

I'm sure hospitals still keep a balanced mix of experienced nurses and NV recent grads. . . but I don't think NV BON have that much of an influence on who the hospitals around here should hire . . . . I hope things get better soon for all of us!

FriscO, CA offers 40/hour for starters..a lot of difference than in las vegas. is it okay to have the BLS,PALS,ACLS certification online?

Alot of my graduating class who wanted to stay in Vegas has a hard time finding a job if they didn't already have one set up. Sad, but true. My NM explains it by saying it takes alot of dough to train one new grad as well as finding staff who are willing to train them. If you only have so many approved preceptors per unit you can only hire so many new grads. And its true about the economy. I'm in ER and our entire hospital is really counting on us to keep admissions high, so that equates into fast movement of patients. It's crazy the speed that we go at now to fill beds. I'm just happy I'm in an area where there is still the resources for my training.

This is why I'm glad to be working in an area of nursing where, for now, we aren't in danger of a slow down in the number of patients we treat. Since most of their treatments are covered by Medicare, though, it could turn bad depending on how the government decides to do things. But I have friends who are either being laid off or having their hours cut because people are simply putting off medical care/procedures. I work in dialysis where these people HAVE to have their treatments...it's not a negotiable thing. There are days when work sucks but I'm very, very thankful to have a full time job right now!

my relatives told me that there were shortages of EXPERIENCED nurses. sigh! im a new grad and im really having a tough journey in looking for a nursing job.
