Moving to Vegas-HELP!

Hello~

I just found out my family and I will be moving to Las Vegas at the end of July. I'm trying to get info on the hospitals there - which ones are the nice ones, which pay more, etc. I currently live in Texas working as an RN in IMC with 1 year experience. Any info would be greatly appreciated. My husband is military so I don't need the healthcare benefits and I also thought about doing agency/contract work. Anyone have experience in that area? What can you tell me about the area around the AF base?

I've never been to Las Vegas so any information would be great. Thanks in advance!

I am not too sure how the hospitals differ in pay, but I have heard good things about Sunrise and St. Rose. It may also depend on what side of town you are living on, because traffic can be a real nightmare out here.

Only one hospital (that I know of) posts salary info on their website. It is for the County Hospital-UMC. Here is a link to their website. I heard that they have great benefits.

Nellis AFB is located in North Las Vegas - you do not want to live near the base! Very expensive to live there...we were stationed there from 90 to 92 and PCS'd very unexpectedly. At the time I was an LPN and worked at Sunrise...however, that was many years ago. If you like trauma, UMC is the place to goat. Unsure of other options but I was back there in Sep 07 for a week-long conference and the place has really grown.

Still, North Las Vegas is not where you want to be. That said, that's where base housing is located. We did live off-base because of the base housing wait at the time.

Good luck.

I moved out here in November...I live in North West Las Vegas. I love it here. I just took a position at North Vista Hospital..It is a very small hospital. But I have 2 xray techs who live next door, and she tells me that UMC is the place to work. I also had a outpt surgery nurse tell me that they offer the best benefits and highest pay in the valley. Then there is the issue of Union vs. Non-union. North Vista is non-union and there is one other hospital but I'm not sure which one. I have been to Mountainview Hospital...and it's really clean and friendly. They just opened Centennial HIlls hospital too.

Check out Centennial Hills. It is probably your closest outside of the AFB. Several nurses work here from the base. It is new and growing quickly. The area surrounding Centennial is nice with lots of shopping. We just opened in January, and had some growing pains as we were much busier than expected, but are on track and doing well now. I think we have positions in IMC also. Good luck!

Hi and welcome to Vegas. I work at both UMC and St Rose Siena. The benefits are pretty equal at both places. The salary is actually higher at St. Rose. UMC is a great place to work as is ST. Rose. No matter where you decide to work...best of luck hrob

Hey, I am an RN whose husband is also stationed at Nellis. We made the choice to live on base because it is safe and the commute would be too long if we lived in a "nice" part of town. Also, they are building brand new homes that we will be moving in to in a month.
I started working at the new hospital in town here and was shocked by the ratios and disorganization. It was not like the nursing I had done in WA state. I felt like every time I went to work I was potentially putting my license at risk. I would recommend checking out the base hospital. They use American Hospital Services Group to do their hiring. Also the pay to work in the clinic is only 2 dollars less than the pay to work in med/surg downtown. They also have medsurg, ICU and OB at the hospital.

Hope this helps and happy moving!
Sam

Hi PinkPrincess,
Happy to hear you liked the St Rose Hospitals they also have another campus-DeLima. It is older than the other too. It is the original campus and is a CHW Healthcare Hospital. Good luck and welcome to Vegas
