Layoffs at Sunrise?

Anyone else hear that Sunrise laid off a bunch of nurses in the last few days? And I also noticed that the number of available RN positions in the Valley Health System are definitely lessened in the last few weeks. Is there something going on? Or is it just the cruddy Las Vegas economy?

some of the VHS offer new grad position, i tried to apply but was unlucky.

I work there and they layed off about 158 people, 50 or so were nurses. There are positions open, but they can pay a new hire less than a RN who has bben there 10 years (all about the money). They reevaluate about every 3 months.

I am really sorry to hear that. It seems that the hospitals locally, much like the casinos, will take what chance they may to get rid of those that cost them more. I may be a student now, but I do hope to be experienced one day, and I expect to be paid commensurately.

Hospitals may be able to pay new nurses less, but they also have to spend a lot of money to train! I had one week of hospital orientation, then a month of specialized teaching, then a month of floor training, and then shadowing from a preceptor! That is a reality. (VHS has hired a lot of new grads recently.)

I dont think its just Vegas. I live in Arizona, and I cant find a job. I have been unemployed for about 4 months going on five months. I have had a total of 5 interviews. I have submitted applications to all hospitals, and do so as jobs are posted. I think the economy, low census, and the healthcare bill is effecting the job market now. Hopefully things will pick up come October when the census goes back up.

I was just talking about new hire nurses, not new RNs just out of school sorry. Each unit is allowed to hire only so many new grad nurses a year, from what I understand anyway. From what I hear some hospitals will not hire new grads now to save money. With that being said my unit hired a few new grads this year and only a few stayed past orientation.
