It's Oct 18 - 505girl time


Hey 505 - how are things going? I'd like to ask you a few questions, and if others have answers as well, feel free to share.

I'll graduate in May. I'm planning to take a visit in December to determine if it's feasible to live in either of the following locations and be able to work/commute to Las Vegas:

Boulder City
Bullhead City
Primm
Pahrump
Any other outlying area any of you could recommend. I'm looking for a reasonably priced rambler that either has a pool in the back yard or the ability to have one installed.

So 505 and all others, does this kind of commute sound plausable?

Hi JayRelic,
Just wanted to share my thoughts on these locations.
Boulder City - yes a commute is possible ... not too far from Vegas.
Pahrump - 1.5 hr.-2hr. The commute can be dangerous at night. 2 lane road most the way. A Hospital is being built in the near future.
Primm Nevada 2 hr. or more... California travlers can back up the highway to Vegas and vice versa ..LOL
Bullhead City is at least 10 degrees hotter than Vegas it gets very hot in the summer.It's also very close to Laughlin ..right across the river. Still a 2hr. or more commute.
Best choice would be Boulder City..it has a nice smaller town feel.
There is also Mesquite Nevada 2hr. commute
All commute time is for one way.

Hi Twinkie - thank you for sharing that information. I really appreciate it. So I'm thinking - a 2hr commute...one way. I honestly wasn't expecting to hear that. I was thinking along the lines of 45-60 minutes/one way, not 120.

Are there other facilities in the places mentioned that hire new grads? I'd be just as happy working somewhere near home vs. *having* to work in Las Vegas. Or, am I going to find that 99% of the jobs are in Las Vegas, and there aren't any facilities in those outlying areas?

The way home prices have hit the roof in and near LV, I was hoping to find something in the afore-mentioned outlying areas. Perhaps that is a pipedream??

Also, do you mind sharing where you work and if they hire new grads? I'd also like to get a feel for how much hiring is currently happening in the area. I hate to ask, ask, ask, but I have found that members on this board are extremely helpful.

edit - oops, just noticed you too are a current student. but perhaps you have a feel for hiring in the area?

Here's my take...and hi Twinkie!!!

Boulder City...10 minutes into Henderson, probably a goo 30 mins to any LV hospital (or more), plus it's kindof a ritzy area. Prices are higher there for homes than most in LV or Henderson.

Bullhead, AZ...too darn hot!!
Laughlin, NV...across the river, basically the same "town", the road to these towns is EXTREMLY dangerous! That's where Sam Kinesen (sp) died.
Primm, NV...actually about 45mins into LV, but as Twinkie said, traffic on the weekends can stop you in your tracks, plus I don't think there's much there but casinos and some modulars for employees. If you blink, you could miss it.
Pahrump...Growing fast! If you lived there, you would want to work there. It does snow on the way to Vegas, so road conditions won't always agree with you. But, hey, the famous "Chicken Ranch" is there, so your visitors would have something to do , just kidding! (It's a brothel)
Some people I know commute from Logandale, which is about 45mins to an hour north.
Me, personally, I live on the outskirts of Henderson, near Boulder City. I love it. It's like I don't live in the "city". There is a hospital about 5 minutes away (St. Rose Dominican). Some areas over here are OLD, but it is growing fast. Newer areas surround those older ones.
But, I'm bound for Boise, ID when I graduate, so...
Can't stand the heat, people, hustle-bustle. Loved it when I first moved 13 years ago, but now that I have kids...I need quiet!

Boulder City is nice, but from what I hear, it can be a tad expensive (housing). I live in Henderson, and I absolutely love it. Boulder is like 8 minutes from me. I work at St. Rose Dominican hospital. I know they are always hiring new grads, even in the ICU and ER. Med. Surg. is ALWAYS hiring new grads, if that's your gig. As far as housing, my husband and I were looking at homes the other day, and actually found some for like $285,000. These were in nice areas of Henderson, with square footage of 1400-1700, which is fine for us. Good luck with everything.

There are still affordable housing spots in las Vegas. Just don't expect a mansion. I just spent over $500K for a house this week, but there were plenty in the same area for $260. I still love my job; there are always crazy nights where I stay super busy...but its nice that the hours fly by. I am still working 50 hours a week.

Have you adjusted to the sleep schedule on nights? Last night was my first nightshift, but I was fine because yesterday I slept for about 3.5 hours before my shift, but I was fine because I got a good night's sleep. Today however, I came home, was in bed by 9am, and woke up at 12pm...I am exhausted, my eyes are burning, and I cannot go back to sleep. Plus to top it off, I have to work tonight. Also, my eating schedule is all messed up. I eat breakfast when I get home, and since I'm awake by noon, I eat lunch, then eat dinner before I go to work. Problem is, when I'm at work, at around 3 am, I'm ready for another "dinner". This is not good because I'm currently trying to lose weight. Looks like tonight I'll be heading to Starbuck's for some assistance with staying awake. I certainly do not want to fall into the habit of relying on coffee to stay awake. How do you manage things?

I just eat whenever I feel hungry--I don't try to stay on the traditional 3 meals a day thing, cause thats out the window. My locker is stocked with cup-o-fruits, vegetable soups and diet sodas. but there is also a cafeteria open at night for me to get a salad or grilled chicken. For energy, I drink 1-2 MONSTER energy drinks. Lots of caffeine and other stuff that keeps me up all night, but I fall asleep easily when I get home. I am a natural night owl, so I am not too far messed up. I usually stay so busy that I dont have time to think how tired I am. If you are working 12 hours shifts, you SHOULD be eating twice during that time period. That is too long to starve your brain from carbohydrates. Then, you'd be so hungry, you'd overeat when you got home. I've lost 20lbs in 3 months since I started working.
