Hi. I am employed there. If you are looking to work there, I would wait a year or two as there are a lot of kinks that need to be worked out. The nurse/pt ratios are awful. I had 8 patients at one point the last day shift I worked. They are pretty behind the times as far as technology (still use a lot of paper charting and hand written mars). None of the nurses carry cell phones or pagers. They opened the hospital without having any transporters, so nurses and CNAs had to do that work. Working conditions are not very good. I am lucky to get one 15 min break for the 12.5 hour shift. The hospital is also very understaffed. They got very busy in a short amount of time, so they opened a 2nd med surg floor without having staff for it.

Hope this helps!

That is such a shame. Unfortunately I don't think time will fix the ratios. I have worked Med/Surg at a seasoned hospital in Las Vegas and had the same problem with the ratios. I just won't do it again.

Hi,
I'm working there now in the ER for 6 weeks. Much of what you say is likely true, lots of paperwork, lots of pt's held in ER because of no beds, and probably not enough staff. They are continualy hiring from what I understand, but there are alot of openings and alot of travelers.
Do I think it might become a pretty good place to work? quite possibly. Is it a horrible place to work now ? no, not at all. It can get pretty hectic, but it's better than lots of places i've been. The full time staff is helpful, the docs are pretty cool for the most part, you have a pretty fair amount of autonomy, but they need more techs or medics to help out, i think.
It's a clean, new hospital, and i hope they get things worked out soon, so the full-timers and the next group of travelers enjoy their time there.

i uses to work here. helped open the doors. i have worked in alot of hospitals over the last 22 years, and this was the shortest job i ever had. i think it will take a good 3-4 years to get this place right. now i think it is a bad place to work.

Bocachick,
Elaborate please, nothing personal, but with 22 years of experience, you should have something concrete to say.

Does anyone who works at Centennial Hills know if they are new-grad friendly? My fiancee has convinced me to move to Las Vegas upon graduation and he wants to live around that area of town.

I do not know if they are nurse grad friendly. I do know they have hired new grads in the past. I don't work on the floor so I can't speak for them but I love my dept, and I honestly think we are one of the best hospitals in the valley (the polls are reflecting that also). Good luck to you and your fiancee.

edit---I said one of the best........I mean THE BEST.

I applied last week for a position on the med/surg unit and was told that because they are a newer hospital they are not hiring new grads at this time. They said something to the effect of wanting to establish themselves first and then they'll consider hiring new grads. So if they were hiring new grads before, they aren't anymore.

I dont know if it will help but Centennial Hills is parented by Valley Health Systems which owns 4 other hospitals in the Valley...check out some of those. Good luck to you.

Just a word of caution---Vegas is being hit HARD by unemployment and layoffs (in all industries)---I would NOT come to this city without a secure job. Most people that do end up blowing through their savings and still end up without a job.
