For preceptorship, you give your top three choices (hopsital and area) and they do what they can to place you somewhere that interests you. You have to do 120 hours (10 12-hour shifts) and you follow the work schedule of the preceptor you have been assigned. Good luck! You are almost there!

I graduate from CSN in May and just finished my preceptorship. Have fun with it. It is actually a great experience!

Also, the clinical instructor is assigned to specific hospitals. They manage the student load at that hospital, and you see them rarely. Usually just for your midterm and final evals. It was fun!
Make sure you get your paperwork in, as soon as they allow it, for your choices of units.
Have a great second year!!!!!

Do you pick your choice with the hospital or can you pick the same thing in 3 different hospitals so that you are guaranteed an area that interests you? Oh and what do you guys think is the most common choice that CSN students pick?

Well, I can't quite remember if there is a space to put which hospital, but put one anyways! I was a nurse apprentice for St. Rose, so I made sure to write that on the form. My first choice for hospital was St. Rose, then I picked 3 areas. Postpartum, mom & baby, L&D. Darlene was the instructor for the hospital (which you don't find out until just before preceptorship starts). She was at Sunrise too. Darlene was fantastic, as far as support and letting me do my thing. I had a wonderful time! There isn't spots at ALL the hospitals, so if you have the opportunity, ask which ones they place students at. I know a lot of students were upset with Valley (behind UMC). It didn't matter what area they wanted, they all got Med/Surg, and some worked the night shift. I sure wouldn't want to work for them if that is the message they throw around to new upcoming job seeking grads. Unfortunately, we still had to wear whites (except Peds placements), but...you really get the feel for a 12 hour shift and what you went to school for all this time.

Only 10 12-hour shifts? Dang!

@ UNLV -- they are making us do 2 12-hour shifts a week for 12 weeks. They also make us do 124 hours of community and management rotations.

There was a CSN student who did weekend grave shifts on the pediatrics floor for her preceptorship.

Yes, but you are getting what you work for. While you will finish with a BSN, we will be ADN's and we may even have to repeat the rotations you're doing if we want to bridge one day.

I understand that. Was just making a general comparison.

We actually have a CSN graduate in our research class that is bridging to the BSN -- he may actually bridging to the MSN.. not sure.
