EMT new to forum

Hey all,

My name's Nick and I'm brand new to the forum. I'm an EMT and I start the RN program @ Apollo College on April 6th. My mom's a RN and my dad's an MD so of course I had to enter into the bastard child of medicine, EMS. I've come to my senses and I am so excited to start nursing school. Anybody else starting Apollo in April? I've been browsing hospital websites gandering at jobs. It seems like UMC is one of the only places that routinely hires newgrads into the ER/ICU? Is that right?

i wish you the best of luck in your schooling !! i did not graduate from appollo , but i am sure you will hear from people who have . i know right now UMC is at a hiring freeze and not hiring anyone. many of the hospitals in las vegas have stopped hiring new grads, or anyone at this time. hopefully the ecomony will pick up and new grads will be hired again soon.

my friend was just hired at valley hospital and she graduated from CSN RN program last may and was just hired last month. the hospitals typically only hire one or two grads every few months. i am not sure if sunrise and north vista is hiring new grads at this time...

by the time you graduate maybe all the hiring freezes sould be off.. i hope so.. keep us posted on your schooling ..

Congrats on getting in Nick, all the best of luck to you. I too am interested in Apollo when and if they open their new campus up here in Reno. Was it hard to get into your program ?

Not too hard. I took the NET test and did an interview. You find out after that if you're in or not. I'm extremely excited.

Will my EMS background and acute care experience look good on my nursing CV when I get out?

Hi Nick,

Did you take the NET and do the interview all on the day you went to the info session?

No. I went to the info session. A week later I took the NET test and maybe a week after that I did my interview. If you're in Admissions calls you and schedule you for a Financial Aid meeting. You get your paperwork, fill it out, bring it back. FA goes over it. Then you do all your paperwork with Admissions, do your drug test and background check and then you're in like flint.

Nick, may i ask, did all your financial aid cover the hefty tuition ? I'm afraid that my entire tuition won't be covered (i've completed most of the pre-reqs) and it would be really hard to get private loans on my end. How do you know if all your tuition is covered or not ? Please share

Tuition is 45,000. Because I'm only 22 I had to declare my parents income as well as mine so I was only able to get Federal unsubsidized loans. I got 19,000 worth of loans, leaving like 26,000 remaining.
