Default other parts of nevada?
Sounds interesting.
Can anyone tell me about other areas of nevada? Family-friendly? Any suitable for growing a garden? Home-schooling? Raising a family? Pay and working conditions for nurses compared to Vegas? How about LPNs in med-surg or LTC?
Will Pur water filters work there? (we also have a distiller, which we're not using at this time).

But i have adjusted just fine, since i am no longer in the hospital setting, i choose office setting and love it. i avoid traffic via surface streets much faster than the crappy freeways out here, just like so. cal. i love the heat, hate the cold due to the winds when they pick up during the cold season, i wish it would be warm all the time, i can handle the 120's just fine just let me be by the water!!!! oh wait, the lake is disappering, water shortage is serious out here! Stop building. there is watering restrictions, cant even wash your car at your house, so here i drive in my nice german car that i worked so hard for and its flipping dirty, and the car washes arent cheap and do a crappy job, my dog can do a better job. ITS ALL ABOUT LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. we all know crime is everywhere you just need to know where to move, stay out of the ghetto, thats where it all happens lol, no its everywhere, my hubby is CSI and tells me about all the bad areas, so i have a sense of where to stay out of, for my safety. Remember location location location. Many hospitals not many nurses, if i needed to be flown to the hospital for trauma reasons i would mark on my chest in ink take me to a different state, this place is scarry. our own governor went out of state for surgery.... tell ya something, its sad but true, i hope vegas gets better in the health care thing along with the malpractice issues, that scares our docs away the good ones!!!!!!!
so all in all vegas is wonderful place to reside, if you like the heat, and want to have something to do, i pretty much avoid the strip like the plague, im only there when i have company
Yes, I remember when our governor went to UCLA...that put's a lot of confidence in the city...Roy went out of state too. I agree, I would rather be flown to LA then go here.

And, No, A Pur water filter WILL NOT WORK out here. You need to buy your water...plain and simple...oh and get a water softner.

I agree with the OP, I love the heat! I hate the wind! I never thought about wind until I moved here...matter of fact I can here it wipping in between the houses right now....gotta love the windy spring time!

I left Vegas a couple of years ago. Working 3 days a week 12 hour shifts my usual daycare bill for 2 kids was 750$ a month. It is very difficult to find decent childcare. The schools are beyond bad, overcrowded, poorly funded , violent unsafe, best thing I ever did getting my kids out. So put private school or homeschooling into your budget,

1200square foot house 200,000$. Make sure you save up a down pmt. That's if you're lucky enough to find one. I would say not family friendly.

It can be a fun place to stay for a while for adults but raising kids in a party town is a bad deal for them. I've seen too many kids turn onto drugs, raves, and the bigtime sex trade in that town.

I worked at Valley, UMC, and did agency extra shifts at Sunrise, Desert Springs. I've worked so short staffed so many shifts that I couldn't count. Yes it's been a couple of years but it was common nightly to have 10 to 14 pts per nurse and maybe 2 CNAs to help out the whole floor. I couldn't count how many times I cried all the way home in the morning overwhelmed beyond belief. I worked Ortho/med/surg.

That was my experience in LV. No amount of money could get me back.

Good to hear it from someone who left.

Oh, and BTW, not all of us ravers turn out so bad But...and it's a big butt, that are not what they use to be and this town is all about sex.

iliel,
I'm reading your posts and laughing EVERYTHING SAID IS SOOOO TRUE! I've been here for a little over a yr and dead on I say me and this town is a love hate relationship too. How funny. I'm from MA did you come from the east coast also? I think the traffic time is because of the lights, you can eat a cheeseburger waiting for the light to go green. Especially if your on a less used street late at night, on the east coast if you pull up(late at night) to a red light and there is no opposing traffic the green light on the other side changes to red and you get the green light. They have some type of sensors around them.Or if people would stop slamming their brakes on in the middle of the highway for no apparent reason (What is that about) that would save a lot of time. Its like a 24 gawk factor.
The health care does stink out here and I too have taken an office job instead of being a real nurse because of it. If I ever got really sick ship my *** on the first plane to Boston. SERIOUSLY!

I lived in and around Reno, Nevada for 28 years and I loved it. It's not as glitzy as Las Vegas but a little bit more expensive to live and it's also growing but not as fast as Las Vegas. I have worked at all 3 acute care facilities and worked in the Washoe Pregnancy Center several years ago. I now live in Salt Lake City and I would give my right arm to go back to Reno. I loved it there and the wages for nurses is not bad. We did quite well after I graduated from nursing school in 1993.

Thumbs up Great comment about Vegas....While you're thinking
about Nevada....think the other area of Nevada. Carson City/Reno.

Pay is very similar, patient population is lower.

I have all kinds of pictures of this area - if you interested in pursing nursing in Nevada - PM me - maybe I can steer you to an operation that would appreciate those with a great critical care back ground. Relocation assistance is totally possible..

Question What is the job outlook here?
Is there a steady supply of jobs in Vegas? I don't see much activity in this forum for Nevada. I may be moving here next year and would appreciate your input. Thanks. Craig.

Yes there is a steady supply of nursing positions open around here. Vegas keeps on growing and they keep building new hospitals everytime i look around, dont know what area of nursing you are in but i know there is a big shortage out here just as every where else you look. they also have good sign on bonus!!
