Can anyone tell me about Touro ?

by gabby27

Hi everyone,
I've been thinking about applying to Touro after the completion of my A&P prerequisites. I've heard it's a bit expensive and only provisionally accredited but have also heard some great things. Can anyone let me know a little bit about the program. How are the instructors, is it a relatively difficult program. Any information will be helpful.

i have only heard good things about touro and a friend of mine graduated from there and she said it was worth every penny. she took out student loans to pay for it and now she is happily making very good money. i have a friend in the D.O program now and she loves all her instructors. yes they are hard but you know you know your material. i would suggest go there if i ever went back to school. what is your major and where are you going to school after you finish your prereqs? CSN also is a very good school. keep me posted

I was accepted at Touro into their nursing program but decided on NSC instead due to time and money. It appeared to be a really great program. I met alot of the instructors during the tour and they all seemed really knowledgable and supportive. Alot of the newer nursing programs only have provisional BON approval because they need to maintain a certain NCLEX pass rate for so many years (I was told it often takes 7+ years to get full approval). They like to know that the program can consistently prepare students for the test. If money and time weren't an issue for me I probably would have chosen Touro but I'm pretty happy at NSC right now. My first semester was awful, but they made some changes and I feel pretty good about my current level of learning and my clinical experiences.

Any more replies anyone? Gabby did you decide to apply?

I want to do some prereqs first and get them out of the way. Especially since the school doesn't start classes until June. Does anyone know if this is ok?

Will they accept A&P classes from a community college? I'm guessing it won't lessen the cost, but I want to be sure don't get in over my head taking non-nursing classes & nursing classes at the same time.

Elsewhere on this board it appears most agree that it can be a recipe for failure!

When I applied last year you had to have all of the preqs done before you could start the program. Guess that must have change.

Dreamon,

I haven't applied just yet, i'm still not sure about Vegas and need two more prerequisites before i apply anyway. From what I understand they will take any courses from colleges once it is from an accredited school. I even asked about online A&P from Edukan or Rio Salado and they assured me it was fine. They also said that your science classes can even be 10 years old, it doesn't matter. I don't know how hard it is to get in though.... it kind of sounds to good to be true.. except for the price that is.

Sorry Dee, I should have specified that was a different Touro in another state, I didn't realize things were so different being that it is the same school organization. The one I'm looking into does prereqs right along with the nursing classes. That made me a bit nervous.

Dee, would you mind sharing your application stats? I've really been considering the ELM program at Touro lately. Glad to hear that you're having a good experience at NSC!

They're a new program so they are pretty lenient. When I applied, you had to already have a degree (I got into their ELM program). You had to have a 3.0 gpa but with the classes they counted for this I had about a 2.8 (its funny because each program I applied to I had a different GPA because of what they considered part of the nursing curriculum). I had a 99% TEAS. I had a brief interview during their open house and was immediately accepted. I don't think you'd have a problem getting in.

i am currently at touro in my 3rd semester. my class is the first "bsn" class and its been really weird. we have been short with our letcure time, clinical hours and they just told us unoffically that we wont have a preceptor our last semester, that starts in about 6 weeks. i know the next class that comes in will have it so much better. for example, we werent taught medication calculations but the next class will be. they have tried to work with us about our concerns, but have been too busy with getting things together for the next class. another thing my class is 40 students, which they dont have enough teachers, the next class is 80. they dont have enough to teach both at the same time!
