Epilepsy Monitoring Unit

  1. 0 Hi all,

I just accepted a position on an EMU. I am a new grad (Dec '12) and this will be my first RN position. Is there anyone out there that can give me some advice that could help me prepare for this position before I start? Any information would be appreciated! Thanks!!

Review the various types of seizures and appropriate drug levels for common AEDs. Is this unit exclusively an epilepsy unit or are there other neuro patients as well? Many patients admitted for long term video EEG monitoring are taken off their AEDs or the meds are dose reduced in the hopes of provoking a seizure. Are these patients ever admitted for pre-surgical evals?

    PequenopatoRN.... (love the username!)

I just got a call to interview for an RN position on a neuro epilepsy care unit & wondered if you could share some insight on what to expect (interview ?s, what a typical day is like, etc).

Would you recommend an epilepsy monitoring unit to a new grad? (I just took my NCLEX in Feb)
