Perl------a?

  1. I know this is prolly a stupid question , but PERL means pupils, equal and reactive to light. What does the "A" stand for? I've been trying to get this questioned answered by everyone I work with in LTC and no one seems to know the answer. I know that you gals and or guys can help me.

only a conscious patient will accomodate: which is basically to focus in on what they are looking at.

I thought accomodation was the unlit pupil becoming larger when the other pupil had light shone in it. (If that makes any sense.)

I thought that accomodation meant the patient is able to follow the examiners fingers and as the examiner moves her fingers closer to the face the pupils constrict and when moved away the pupils dilate.
Accomodation, as in the adjustment of the pupil to light according to what the patient is focusing on.

This is what I was taught also.

Accomodation is also called the near reflex. The pupil contricts to adjust light and focus on an object that is close. If the object is moved away from the face and farther away the pupil must eventually dilate and adjust the light again to focus.

When one pupil constricts because the opposite was stimulated with a bright light...it is call consentual. Pupils should react to both direct and consentual light.
