Management of HTN without increasing ICP


Quiz time: Your using cardene to manage HTN in your neuro pt. If you had to use another antihypertensive med., which would be the least likely to cause an increased ICP and why?

A. Labetolol
B. Nipride
C. Apresoline

We always have PRN orders for labatelol and apresoline so I would say that either one of those would be least likely. Labatelol is our first line drug, then apresoline, then vasotec.

Not sure the answer as to why least likely to increase ICP.

We only use nipride, if they come from OR or another unit with nipride, and then we change ASAP to cardene. We are the only unit allowed to use cardene at the facility I work at.

Labetalol is the least likely to increase ICP. Like the other response I don't know why.
