I've been with Alegent Health for over 7 years, and while I've witnessed a few short falls, I wouldn't avoid it "completely." There are going to be issues anywhere you work - one time or another. On a scale of 0 to 10 (10 being complete job satisfaction), I'm an 8. I will say this, however, if you do decide to work for Alegent Health, avoid using their insurance.

What is wrong with their insurance? What are these "major issues" with alegent? Maybe I am clueless! I haven't had trouble with it, except they won't pay for my damm birth control. I'm a married woman for God's sake!! I guess I can understand thier religous objection, but wouldn't the nursing shortage get a lot worse if all the female nurses were on the calendar method?

I would rate my job satisfaction as a 9. I work in LTC and my only complaint is lack of adequate staffing, but you will find that anywhere.

Traffic in Omaha is not bad at all. I grew up in Denver, and it is heaven by comparison. The nice places to live are in West Omaha, but you might consider Fremont or Bellevue if you want to avoid higher property taxes.

I moved to Omaha eight years ago, and wouldn't be living anywhere else. My family and I live in NorthWest Omaha by Elkhorn. I love this area of town. It is quiet at night and is generally that way during the daytime as well. We have lots of construction going on our here so I expect it to be a completely different scene in five years.

I always thought I wanted to raise my children in a small town here in Nebraska, but to tell you the truth...you get violence, crime, etc in even the small towns in Nebraska. I'm really looking forward to raising my children in Omaha. There are lots of activities for them, and they have all the sports, dance, swimming, etc opportunites that a kids could dream of.

There are certainly parts of Omaha I wouldn't be caught dead...or could be caught dead in at night. North O or South East O is pretty hairy at night.

As for the Iowa/Nebraska thing...I would pick NEBRASKA over Iowa all the way. I got my nurses training in Iowa...and things just make more sense here in Nebraska. This may be a bit inappropriate but we fondly refer to IOWA as "Idiots Out Wandering Around"...also...Council Bluffs...Council Tukey...get my point? :-)

CNA's at UNMC can start anywhere from 10-12 dollars/hr. depending on the unit and intensity of the job.
