Took the NCLEX in 75 questions... and failed

I'm an international student, graduated a year ago, took forever to get everything together for my BON application, finally took the NCLEX 2 days ago (August 19th). The exam shut off after 75 questions. I felt happy at first because I was out early, but then the feeling of failure crept over me and remembering my answers and the types of questions I was getting I KNEW I failed. I got a few SATA questions and very few medication questions and I'm sure I answered those all incorrectly. A lot of it was teaching for me and delegation too, which I guess the teaching are lower level questions... I kept on thinking "is this a high level or a low level question?" on every question. I went in confidently and really thought I could pass, but I had no clue about anything in any of the questions and I felt like they were all somewhat vague.

Does the fact that I only went through 75 q mean that I had no chance to pass? Did I really do that badly?

I used Kaplan, Hurst, and the NCLEX Mastery App. I guess I just didn't apply myself hard enough. I know I can do better. I know I'll take it again and pass. I know it is something achievable, but only 75 questions feels like the NCLEX told me "don't bother with more questions past this point, you already failed". :(

I failed. The quick results came up and my status is "Fail".

Sorry if this is long, i'm also a foreign educated student and also took the NCLEX on August 19 and failed so I know exactly how this feels. So i'm venting because i'm depressed.

If it makes you feel any better i'm also a foreign educated nursing student. I first took the NCLEX around April and failed in 76, then I took it again on August 19 and failed in 240. When I took it the first time I also felt confident leaving because the questions felt easy. Which in hindsight was not a good thing since the questions should be incrementally getting harder, so I guess I didn't know enough to get to the harder questions. Then when I took it a second time I was panicking when I was reaching up to the 200s. I kept trying to figure out how well I was doing by the difficulty of the questions. I as devastated when I found out yesterday I still failed even after going through all that.

Trust me I know how you feel, especially coming from a foreign educated student. I don't think my studying abroad helped prepared me enough for this because when I was studying I felt like I was learning some things for the first time. I feel like i'm at a disadvantage compared to our US educated counterparts who have a 80 something percent chance of passing, while we only have about a 15% chance. I never had Kaplan in our program and I did not go through the the HESI exam. But it is possible and I know a handful of foreign educated nurses who passed.

As for studying for the next time I have some advice for study material. The online Hurst review is great, it taught me the core content in a way I could understand. But it did not cover everything I would encounter in the NCLEX. So try finding another content book to supplement your studies. I also took the NCLEX Mastery app, I did not finish I thought it was okay but I felt it wasn't good enough to be a main study material. That being said, doing a lot of questions helps a lot. It helps teach you things you don't already know about certain things and helps you think critically. I used an online qbank called UWorld. You can look all over allnurses, everyone is using these days. The questions are challenging and the rationals are very detailed. And the way it is formatted looks exactly like the NCLEX. I remember getting a few questions in the NCLEX that were very similar in UWorld. Another good online source would be NCSBN. They have study material online and a qbank. The qbank is not as sophisticated as UWorld but still good if you want some study material and questions. They are also the people that make the NCLEX, if i'm not mistaken.

Anyways I think I have been typing too much, sorry again if that was a lot. If you have any more questions let me know. But you can get through this, everyone fails. And you did not get all the way through nursing school to fail now. Take some time off if you have to, clear your mind. And pray about it, because everything happens for a reason and is probably helping to make you a better person.

Thank you for that. When I made this thread I think I was seeking encouragement and kind words, your post helps me feel better knowing I'm not alone. Most of my friends in my same program failed the first time and passed the second. I'm combining Hurst and Remar this time and following in the steps that my best friend from nursing school took and she passed the test on the 17th. I've heard enough about UWorld to go check it out. This time I have no money for Kaplan, so I'll make due and buy Saunders as well.

I just felt like every time I got a SATA question it meant that I was in the higher level... But I guess not. And I felt like I was lost for every question, that they were vague and undetailed like Kaplan's.

I think a part of it was taking this test so early in the morning. Usually I am at my best after a day of reviewing, and at nighttime is when I took my practice tests. I think that not being used to being awake and analyzing so early was a bigger disadvantage than I thought it would be. It also gave me a false sense of security when it came to my true test scores on my question trainers.

I'll be retaking it in mid October... I'm still grieving since not passing this test means a lot of things in my life won't work out the way I wanted them to. I want to start studying again on Sunday or Monday. I know I'll get this.

ok... this might seem like im advertising but... i just want to share... I graduated 2007, took the NCLEX 7 times reviewing by myself, and failed (was using kaplan and hurst videos). then my brother in law suggested i try that new Rachell Allen 10 day class (i was hesitant and thought it was a waste of money) but i tried it anyway. from the 1st day of class, i felt the difference already. Anyway, to make this short. I only used their lectures and nothing else for content(you'll be surprised on how much info you can absorb in those 10 days). For questions, I only used La Charity and finished it over and over again consecutively until i had 70-75% average score. SOOoooo I passed now, stopped at 75(didn't expect this, but i did). Just sharing this... I know not everyone here knows about Rachell Allen but its what worked for me.

I'll be doing the Remar Review along with Kaplan Q bank. My best friend failed the first time as well and swears by this. I'll probably be doing LaCharity sometime in between as well. I studied in Puerto Rico. Have you scheduled a test date?

$500+ seems like too much money to spend for me. :(

I'm SO happy for you, though. You are strong to be so persistent and not give up after 7 times having graduated years ago. That by itself is amazing. Thank you for sharing and thank you for your suggestion, I'll keep it in mind, but it's definitely too expensive for me at the moment. CONGRATS on passing in 75 questions!!!!
