Second time Success :D

Students NCLEX

Hey everyone this board is awesome I have been checking it so much through out nursing school and the tips everyone posts is so helpful. I knew that once I passed my nclex I would write a post to encourage others trying to defeat this beast of a test.

So my nclex quest started in early july I took a kaplan course( because my school highly advertised it)followed a set schedule did 100 questions or so everyday for five weeks. Took the q trainers scored in the 60's on them. I thought i could pass but then i took my nclex and Failed on 265 questions. I was torn up inside, everyone in my class was passing and I felt like a failure.

Well after 2 weeks with encouragement from friends and family I got over it and was determined to kick this test's butt. I knew this time I needed to focus on content. Doing 100 random Questions and looking up specific rationales wasnt going to work for me. I wanted to look at each topic one at a time so..

SECCOND TIME AROUND: I read through most of SAUNDRS 6th edition except the maternity and pediatric section did questions at the end of the chapters I read. Used the HURST review which helped me focus my content from saunders. MOSBY Flash cards for pharm: I recorded myself reciting each drug and general knowledge about each which helped me retain the info so much more. LASTLY I did questions in LA CHARITY pda newest edition. I studied this time for about 2 and a half months. The last week I took 3 practice tests 1 from a kaplan book and 2 from hurst review I scored pretty decent on them and went in for the nclex.

When I took my test this time I read the questions very carefully wrote down info about the question to really understand it also I tried to pick an answer the nclex would like ie(safest). Prayed took deep breathes and PASSED in 75 questions!! Its the best feeling. If your retaking this test. Know your not alone its very difficult. But overcoming adversity only makes you stronger!!! Keep trying and dont give up!!

CONGRATULATIONS! :) :) :) This is super exciting! I hate (yes, the h-word) the term: "failure" :( I was academically dismissed (aka "failed out") from a really prestigious nursing program almost 10 years ago & had a horribly difficult time coping with this type of "failure." I'm really inspired by nursing students who show resilience, courage, and authenticity in achieving their goals. Life isn't perfect & neither is the process of becoming a R.N. It's difficult because the nursing profession requires / emphasizes NO MISTAKES for the obvious reasons related to patient outcomes, health, safety, etc. However, learning to think like a nurse is really hard & of course as students, we're going to make mistakes - - this is a brand new experience and whole different way of thinking. You should be tremendously proud of yourself for your success on the NCLEX. Stories like yours remind me why I returned to nursing school (yay!) this past year & the need for nursing training / education to center on student learning and mastering concepts vs. fearing failure.
