Ran out of time twice, what's wrong with me?

How much time do you spend on each question? If you are taking longer than 1-2 minutes per question perhaps you are over-analyzing things.

I suppose it's going to sound insanely obvious, but you're spending too much time on each question. A full six hours = 360 minutes; the full 265 questions puts you at a little over a minute (72 seconds) for each question. MAX.

If you're spending more than that, on average, per question, of course you'll run out of time.

When you do practice questions, time yourself. Do you over-analyze and spend too much time? Do you not understand the question and take too much time figuring it out?

Just-e, RNsRWe is correct, you are most likely over-analyzing.

BUT-you need to figure out why. Are you understanding the questions? Do you need more content review? Is there a specific are(s) where you are weak?

Once you know your weaknesses, you can focus on them. If you cannot figure out your weaknesses, I would suggest an NCLEX tutor. They are trained to determine what is going wrong and help you to focus on those areas. Your school is vested in seeing their students pass, so they may be able to refer you to a good tutor. If not, there are at least two names popping up recently in these forums that are recommended by people who passed after multiple fails.

From what I heard, Kaplan recommends around 65-75 seconds per question. Don't over think with each question. Look for the stem and apply critical thinking.

I second to what scaredsilly said, determine what your weaknesses are, either by taking a diagnostic test or just knowing yourself when you were in nursing school. What you felt were your strengths and weaknesses. I personally wasn't too great on pediatrics and psychiatric, even though I heard they were the easiest. Just found out i passed nclex-rn last saturday. Anyways, don't give up and

stay positive.

I also had an issue with time and what I tried to do during the exam was to be decisive. Whenever I felt like I was reading too much into a question or just staying too long, I told myself to move on and select the best answer.

During your prep did you use the timed mode or the tutor mode?

The next time you test do not change one single answer after you mark it. Your first choice is usually the right one. Don't doubt yourself. You know this material. You can show the NCLEX people that you are going to be a great nurse.
