Post Your NCLEX Study Habit

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

I'm a foreign nurse and took the NCLEX last November 2010. I'm still waiting for my result (I got a good pop-up though). I wanna share with you guys my study habit when I was reviewing for my NCLEX-RN.

Preparation Time: 2 months

My Book: Saunder's Comprehensive Review 4th ed & Saunder's Q&A

Live Class: I enrolled at Kaplan

So my live classes in Kaplan was every M-W-F from 9am-2pm/3pm

I read the entire SAUNDERS book, started with Medical Surgical Nursing (Body Systems). I assessed the topic which I'm not good at. It was Endocrine for me so I started reading it first. My study habit was like:

Day 1 - Review Endocrine System

Day 2 - Review Endocrince System (So it's important that on Day 2, I shall complete the chapter on Endocrine System)

Day 3 part1 - Answer 100-200 questions on Endocrince System (Saunder's Q&A) AND Start the next Body System...

Day 3 part2 - Review Renal System....and so on...

*You could make some adjustments

It took me a month and a half to study MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSING. It's up to you what body system you should study first and be sure to use some review techniques that'll help you to recall the topic easily. Example: SHOCK = HYPO TACHYTACHY, increased ICP = HYPER BRADYBRADY. Moreover, always recall, recall and recall.

So I spent a month and a half on MEDICAL-SURGICAL. The remaining 2 weeks, I studied Maternal and Pedia. I didn't study much on Psychiatric Nursing bec. I have a strength on that topic. I studied it but didnt spend too much time on that because you should focus more on your weakness.

For me this habit was effective. You don't need to know anything though. There will still be topics on the NCLEX that are out-of-this world. Also Kaplan's strategies really helped me a lot.

I wish you guys GOOD LUCK. I've been through that anxiety.

Good luck on your results..thanks for the tip

Thank you for sharing that. That's how I been studying I review a body system and I do practice questions on it until I score about a 90 on Saunders cd-rom and then I move on to the next subject. I also answer questions from Incredibly Made Easy, and Saunders q&a book. I also listen to Feuers nursing audio review. If I don't understand something I look it up online by google and some times I watch youtube videos. You can type in just about anything out of your nursing books and find something about it on youtube. Hope this help!
