Passing nclex early and working as extern possible?

Updated Aug 28, 2009 at 01:04 PM by sooperdooper

Hello all! Not sure if this is the correct forum, but I am curious if anyone knows if it is possible to work as an extern if you have passed boards.

My potential situation: I will sit for boards next may but I will not be done with my BSN until Jan or feb of the following year. Between the time I pass boards and my graduation will mostly consist of non nursing classes, thus I would like to work as an extern to keep my skills up to date. I know hospitals will not hire me as a regular employee wthout my degree, but what about non hospital settings as another option. I'm in California and thanks for any responses!

So, are you saying that you plan to sit for the "NCLEX-RN" BEFORE you actually graduate from nursing school?

If you pass the NCLEX (before graduating), do you get your license right away? As long as you're licensed, I wouldn't think employers would have a big problem with hiring you.

Yes. I am a BSN student. My last 8 months of school will be upper division classes (some nursing without clinical rotations plus non nursing classes). I will have completed all necessary classes required to sit for boards next may.

And I know for a fact the hospital nearest to me (Scripps) does not hire those without a degree.

I thought CA will not issue license without you graduating. I know they will let you sit NCLEX before you graduate but thought you had to graduate to get the license?
