I've just written the NCLEX-RN...for the fourth time. I've failed it three times before. I'm really hoping that my extra hard studying pays off this time. I've been studying for this test for years. I think I started studying for it in 2002. I'm really hoping this works because I don't know what I'd do if I fail it again. Has anyone heard of failing NCLEX-RN four times and passing it the fifth time? It sounds hopeless. I feel that, by the fourth failed writing, maybe NCLEX-RN is just too hard for me. After all, English is my second language. The language barrier may be too difficult for me. Is it so difficult to write that some people just can't successfully write it?

What are the alternatives to becoming an RN? If I don't pass it, then what can I do professionally? Are there other nursing career routes that don't require an NCLEX-RN pass?

Please pray for me as I write the test. I'll let you know what happens!

I'm no language expert, but I'd say that based only on your message here, your command of the English language should be sufficient for you to understand the questions on the NCLEX-RN. I don't know if that's what you're hoping to hear or not, but I suspect that there's other factors involved in your unsuccessful attempts.

Have you tried review courses that are specifically designed to help you pass this exam, like Kaplan? I know that Suzanne, one of the moderators of this website, has been able to help quite alot of test-takers (including foreign ones) with her version of a review course. Look at the "stickies" at the top of this board for more information.

Test taking anxiety also makes passing difficult for many people. Reading through the various threads on this message board may help you understand where your past problems lie.

Someone who has completed RN coursework but not passed the NCLEX-RN can sit for the NCLEX-PN and try to become licensed as an LPN. I'm not sure what the success rate of that is, so not sure if it's a great idea or a bad one. In any event, you'd need a license in order to work as an RN anywhere.

Don't let the number of attempts make you feel you'll never pass: I've heard of people failing six times and passing the seventh.

Then again....who says you didn't pass THIS time? Keep positive thoughts flowing!!

Thanks for your encouragement. I haven't found out whether I passed. I'll have to wait and see.

I hope everything will work out for you, or has worked out for you I should say since you've already taken it. Nursing is really a high-risk profession because you go through a lot and hit a lot of road blocks in the process...it's a scary thing. Trust me, I know. I've faced many obstacles too and I haven't even graduated yet...well, next month I will. But I know what you are saying.
You invest time, effort, and money and you have no guarentee.
Hopefully, things will work out. If not, don't give up, just consider a different method of review or study. And consider taking a review or refresher course if you can.

Yep, a good motto to live by: If you do things over and over the same way, you'll get the same result over and over.

So don't you give up, just try different ways of preparing. Just search this forum a bit, and you can get several ideas. This site is just great
