I failed the NCLEX- AGAIN!

Students NCLEX

Published

I am so confused, lost, hurt, sad and overwhelmed. I almost just want to quit and never look back at nursing. I took the Hurst review and I got a book of flashcard questions before the first NCLEX test I took. I failed miserably,75 questions. So I studied harder. Some girls that took the test before me gave me their Saunders, Kaplan, NCLEX 3500 and Exam-Cram cds and books. I did over 100 questions per day and I based it on my weak areas according to the BON results paper they mailed to me. I spent all SIX HOURS there at Pearson and ran out of time, I answered 236 questions and I FAILED AGAIN??????!!!!!!!! I don't know what else to do. I struggled there for six hours up and down, up and down. I was so confused. I didn't know what they wanted. I tried to use all the strategies and Maslow's but it was like I couldn't figure it out and the way the questions were worded didn't seem like the answers fit or they gave parameters that weren't the same as what I learned in the practice questions????? I was fighting back tears for the last two hours during the test knowing I was unable to stay consistent and get above the level needed to pass. Everyone else that I know who has taken it from my program has passed in under 90 questions. What am I doing or not doing????? I did good in my program and I got a 96% on the End of Program. I was scoring 79-80% on the practice tests. Someone anyone advice?????????

I am very sorry that this happened to you. Please don't give up yet. You know you can do it. May be taking break for few days will help you. If you are planning to take another shot at NCLEX, which I hope you are, may be praying would help a great deal. Ofcourse you will need to study again in addition to praying. This time before you begin studying, sit down and think what is the exact thing that is keeping you from passing the exam. For me on my first trial, I did questions after questions and that was my study method. I knew that I needed to do a content review because there were so much information that I didn't know, but I just neglected it and chose an easier way out (and so I failed). But this time, knowing that I really need to focus on content, I have been trying to read a course book, and trust me it is helping me. Plus, I pray everyday. I am not a religious person by any means. But I have been praying for past couple of weeks, and boy! that helps. I just feel this positive energy around me that is constantly pushing to study more and effectively.

Some times we dont get things that we really really want . There is no explaining to it. I studied for months for my NCLEX (no job) and I flunked. But my friend, she studied for 3 days, plus she had a full time job and she passed. So really, I take it as someone is testing me and my strength. After coming to that understanding, I have really believed that someday or the other I will pass this exam and get my dream job. There is no stopping for me!

Hope you will do the same.

Keep at it. There will come a time when you pass, but not if you quit.

Don't give up keeeep on going. once we did nursing we can't leave it. Even though we go to other profession or job still we will get hurt when people will ask us or we

would see other people we know doing nursing job. I guarantee you next time you will pass by God grace. so don't give up try to relax for few days and again back on the track. Good luck. It hurts but what else can be done than studying again.

I'm sorry to hear that but remember, it doesn't mean you can't have a license, it only means that your license will be delayed a little bit longer. The only time you will fail is the time you quit. There's no winning on quiting, remember that. You did nothing wrong, in fact, you did better..From 75 you went upto 236..Keep on doing what you're doing. And prayer is very powerful and helpful too. But right now, give yourself a break, relax and get back to the horse!!!

hi I am sorry to hear that but You can do it when you study like what you do be patient when you anser any Q make sure you understand Q VERY GOOD

KEEP WORK WITH PRAY YOU WILL PASS SOON GOOD LUCK:up::up:

When (regardless of what "book" or "program"you are using) doing questions, review the rationales of the questions you get wrong, understand why the right answer is right, and review the strategies of how to come to the right answer, this tactic is what help me the most I believe, Good Luck!

Specializes in NCA, Graduate Nurse.

I am so sorry to read this story, but listen.....YOU ARE not alone!! I actually just passed my exam on the 17th, and that was my fourth time at the nclex exam. It was seriously the worst experience in my life, and I know exactly what you are goin through. I graduated back in December 2009, and just now passed. It will happen for you, and I know I at this point it does not feel like that, and you do want to give up. I failed my first time after studying saunders, and had to quit my graduate nurse position, very devastating. Then I took hurst review and did mosby's questions, and once again failed. I was at the point of no return. I was so embarrassed, humiliated and depressed. I didnt want to do anything, go anywhere or see anybody. I took the summer off of work, and studied everyday with nclex 4000 cd, took the nclex again in August, once again FAILED!!! I at this point realy wanted to give up my dream, and if it wasnt for my family, and the little voice in my head saying dont give up I would have. I quit studying for 3 months got through the holidays, and then I said this is it!! I am taking this, one more time, and going to give this my all!! I took Kaplans review online class and that was absolutely wonderful. I studied absolutely everything on that website along with linda la charity delegation and priority book. I studied med cards everynight, and made sure I new mneumonics for infection control and electrolytes (hyocalcemia, hypokalemia.ect.) Kaplans works wonders for critical thinking and thats what you need to pass this exam, also a postive attitude. Kaplans made me break down each question. I used to just look at the question and then try to pick an answer that sounds right. ITs not about what you know..its about how to critical think. I would highly reccomend this, and everyday tell yourself you will get through this in GODS time. If this is your dream, you need to go through it, Im so glad I didnt give up. Instead of looking for another review, Im looking for RN jobs!! Its a great feeling and you will get it!!!! My email address is [email protected]. I will even talk to you on the phone if youd like me too..I wanna help cause I know what your goin through.

Hang in there..never give up your dream!!!!!!

Megan,

Thank you for your inspiring message. I just failed the NCLEX this week at my first attempt, and have been in a fog pretty much since. Reading your post was extremely encouraging to press forward. We know the tough road it was to get through the RN program itself - so this CAN be done! Thank you, and I hope all is going great thus far!

I am going to take your advise and try Kaplan. I did hurst, and it did not work for me :(

Powerful words RN6157. I absolutely agree with you. I guess most of the people who need more time to pass the exam are knowledgeable about nursing. They know the information but what they need to do in order to pass is getting really good at their test taking skill.

Afisher2, keep on practicing questions, you dont have to do more questions but just keep on practicing at how you choose your answer and learning from every wrong option you select. Try to know how you answer a question, maybe you'll know whether you need to change your way or just polish it. In regards with review course, i believe Hurst is more focused on contents; while Kaplan drills you on carefully selecting the best answer among the good ones. The latter is probably the best for you. You are smart, you know your information. You can do it! Good vibes!:)
