Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

Hi Guys,

After taking my test I did the pvt for about 20 times within 38 hours and was getting the good pop based on this I thought I passed. The next day I did the pvt again and got the cc page I am so shocked I can't belive it. I haven't been sleeping and I am so down and depressed it was my third time how can pvt be so unrelaible? What is wrong or going on? Wasn't the 24 SATA with 85 questions a good sign? I am so lost, confused and do not know what to do. All I did was crying. I have talked to my professors and some recomended writing a complaint letter I just do not know how to prove them because I did the pvt what am I suppose to say in my complaint? Please help me with this letter in my heart I feel that I passed but how to prove they will tell me pvt is not relaible but what about 24 sata? oh god I do not know any more I am not a good complaint writter please help me desperetlly seeking your help.

Thank you

Karen

No, I shouldn't be more sensitive. If someone has anxiety issues that prevent them from passing a basic exam multiple times, how can they effectively care for a patient who is going bad? Will they magically get over their anxiety then? I doubt it.

No, I don't know how many doctors are out there who took their boards multiple times--what are the stats on that?

Aurora, this thread caught my attention on many levels, so my previous posts concerned a variety of related topics, but I addressed your concern in one of those posts. (You may wish to scroll back...)

There are some of us (including me) who are superb test takers. For sport, I've taken exams that I've never taken the course for just to see how I'd do. I've passed (barely) engineering tests, statistics tests, and entomology exams--with no formal instruction in those areas. (I've also failed others, but hey, I never took the class!) My real understanding of these subjects is marginal, at best. By the same token, I've known people who simply freeze when a test is in their hands. There is a spiraling cycle of fear, failure, increased text anxiety, more failure, and plummeting confidence as a person repeatedly takes a test and fails. Pretty soon, the overwhelming terror is so consuming you can't spell your own name.

In practice, some of these poor test takers are excellent clinicians. I'm not saying it's true for all those who have failed the NCLEX, or even guessing what percentage of those who fail actually have good clinical skills, but the fact is some of those who fail, even repeatedly, can go on to pass and be skillful nurses.

As long as they wish to continue taking the test, retaking classes if necessary, and being subject to the same rules as all others who take/fail the exam, they have some potential for success.

OMG! What the heck happened in this thread here? Let's all go back to studying guys, IT IS WHAT IT IS, the OP already said they let her re-take the exam. Well good luck... Even though I agree with mostly everybody here about why writing a complain letter for failing the exam would they let u re-take the exam for free but I think thread is going nowhere, I think you should just stop replying to this thread and lets start reviewing again so that next time we all pass.

@aurora, and how is nurses with Bipolar are able to care for their patients...??? Test taking anxiety and working with patients is clearly not the same. COme one! As far as Dr's talk to them on the floor and use your google. I have Dr's in my circle who had to repeat exams. Think about this, why would NClex give us some many chances to pass if they didn't see some potential in us. How many nurses would their be is we all only had one chance. Don't be judgmental to other people regarding their compentency, who are you to judge that??

@Patti RN. I love your post and I agree with you.

Well I think I am done with the trend!

Patty is correct I came here because I felt safe and wanted support and not critics nor ignorance. I want to clarify something for people who misunderstood my thread or perhaps did not read it carefully it was not my intention to encourage others to write letters NO. Yes I did ask for suggestions, tips on how to write it but definitely was not my intention to ask you guys to to the same. Just thought to clarify on my part, and as stated previously you only know 10% as what was written so be courteous of others if you continue attacking others the way you are with me also with some other members of AN you will chase others a way with your actions.

First of all, you are always going to get criticized...get used to that. Second, don't use the plight of the African American people and their oppression so freely, there's many other people that have suffered as well, that is like me using my people (the Native Americans) as an excuse or an example. Their and our oppression and discrimination is a world away from taking a nursing license test...nothing to do with it.

Thirdly, you came to this site for help...and you wanted only the nice kind? Like I said, you'll always get criticized. Good luck on the test next time...and don't be so OCD about the PVT k? To be honest I think it's hogwash..I got the CC page and I passed on my first try.

Fourthly- Don't ever put your personal email up on a public all access site!!!!! No no, very dangerous.

Sorry if I went into lecture mode...I feel motherly today

Good luck.

Hi MissMed School,

Thank you for the people like you who are open minded and see the the world through good lenses. If everyone thought like others and through saw everything through the nerrow lenses we whould have lived in a misreable world. I think everyone sees the situation through their own lenses which is understanding.

I was accused of cheating, smelling something fishy, not being a good nurse because I did not pass the nclex and etc... it seems as though many are seeing the world through their fishy eyes.

I was shocked to see this type of responses but I guess I should expect this is human nature wasn't president Obama was questioned for not having his birth certificate? and other accusation or how can a black man became a president? This is the world we live in and we all see everything through based on our experinces and eyes. I am glad there are positive and not fishy smelling people are here. I have nothing to gain by lying.I feel that I can't convey and I am not going to if there is a jeoulosy that I got the ticket and you did not then to bad for you, deal with it.

I really didn't have anything more to add, but was curious about something after reading this post. Karen, is English your native language? Seriously, nobody freak out because I'm asking, I'm not critiquing, I'm just wondering if maybe the spelling, grammar, and general 'flow' problems with the posts are because she's not fluent in the language? I realize it doesn't explain how one achieves a 4.0 WITH a language barrier like this, but still.....could this be the reason for the errors?

How dare anyone say you are not cut out to be a nurse if you failed the NCLEX any amount of times. I don't care what the situation is, no one has the right to say that. Answering questions on a standardized test and performing quality care and giving care to patients are two different things. Other than that, I don't think we know the full situation to even be ignorant and call somebody out. If she got a ticket to retest then good for her. Maybe her test results were glitchy and that's why they gave her the retesting ticket. to me this thread was started out of frustration as we all would be if we failed the NCLEX. So let's try to be more sympathetic and less ignorant. Good luck on your next attempt!!!!

If you cannot pass NCLEX, you cannot be a "good nurse." It does indeed matter. It seems to bear repeating that NCLEX measures minimum competency. You simply cannot be counted on to give good care to patients if you can't meet the minimum standards. Even that doesn't guarantee that someone is a good nurse. It does, however, indicate that the nurse knows the bare minimum to practice.

I think J&J had a commercial that said, "If caring were all that mattered, anyone could be a nurse."

i am going to close this thread with my final lines which is i did not ask for your critics nor ignorance this does not apply to all of you as many of you were kind and emphatetic. i will not lower my standards to these people who only want to attack and constantly are judgmental. so may peace be with you.

karen

when you post in an open forum, you often get critics as well as the warm fuzzies. often, those critics are saying something that they think may help you. the notion that you automatically dismiss everything that differs from your point of view may be an indication of how it is you can fail the nclex over and over. but please . . . don't lower your standards just to talk to me. try to listen instead.

My remarks may be better suited for a different thread, but the subject keeps coming up here that qualified, capable, competent nurses don't fail the NCLEX. This is simply not true. It's not even true that someone who fails multiple times can't be a great nurse. Some people are simply lousy test-takers. Some people (like me) happen to be great test-takers. There is some connection between our knowledge of nursing and our ability to provide care based on that knowledge. But, there is no absolute that a person who struggles because of test anxiety, or language difficulties, or the inability to choose between a handful of answers that are all arguably 'right' is not a capable nurse. When I was in nursing school, I was near the top of my class. A couple people who got better grades did get so by cheating (This is not a case of sour grapes. They actually tried to enlist me in their cheating ring. Worse, they weren't cheating in order to simply survive nursing school; they were's cheating to be on the Dean's list.) On the other end of the academic range was a guy who really did struggle through nursing school. In clinicals he was superior. He knew exactly what to, when to do it, do how to do it, and how to prioritize. Before every test, we studied together and I coached him through the information. His test scores always hovered around failure. He barely passed each test, barely passed each semester, barely passed each year, and barely graduated. He took the NCLEX twice; the first time he was given hundreds of questions and finally he failed. The second time he was given hundreds of questions and miraculously he passed. If I were in the hospital, regardless of my condition, I would want that guy caring for me--not the cheaters from my nursing school, nor some others who passed the NCLEX on their first attempt.

One time? Sure. Two times? Maybe. More than that? Not likely.

why does it not surprise me that you would appreciate missmedschool's uninformed butterflies and rainbows post?

you are not a good nurse. you are not any kind of a nurse. you are not a nurse. in this state of the us, and in most others, you are not allowed to call yourself a nurse at all unless you pass the licensing exam. since you have not passed, you are not a nurse. you are not a bad nurse or a good one. you are not a nurse.

what this has to do with our president, i'm not sure. your posts are increasingly strident and decreasingly coherent. please go and study for your fourth attempt to pass the nclex. you are not a nurse until you pass it.
