After 19 years took NCLEX-RN

Students NCLEX

Hi everyone,

I graduated 1997, took the local nursing board in the Philippines but failed, I was devastated. I was so depressed and ended up getting married. After 14 years, with 3 beautiful girls, my marriage ended bec of domestic violence, moved here in the US, reunited with my first BF and we got married 2014. I was blessed with a baby boy( BTL done). I gave birth August 2015 and January 2016 I said to myself I need to move and be a Nurse. Bought Hurst Reviewer, Lippincott and NCLEX-RN mastery (app)to review; self review while working and taking care of my family. September 2016 my husband and I were Laid Off. I took it as a chance to review for my exam. I took the exam last October 15 and after 3 days I got the result, I failed. CPR= near passing score. 19 years without any hospital experience, no refresher nor follow up study. A lot of things changed in the world of Nursing, from 1997 to 2016. God knows how much i want to become a Nurse, but I have no one to ask for advice or help. So now my plan is to take the exam again (after 45 days) I will get NCSBN review class(8 weeks online review) use Lippincott and Saunders book. Can you give me an advice, pointers, suggestions or help? Thank you in advance. 🙂

I think you need to seriously reevaluate why and how much you want to be an RN. If you feel strongly that you want to continue on that path, I think you need to go back to school. I don't know where in the US you presently reside, but do you have any idea the difficulty that *new grads* in many markets are having in securing their first jobs? These are new nurses that have a *current* education and *current* skills relevant to the field. You do not. Your education and (presumably) skill set is nearly 20 years old. Do you know how to work the IV pumps that are currently in use? When was the last time you started an IV? How about a foley catheter? How are your sterile procedure skills? Ready for electronic charting? How about reconstituting and administering medications? What does HIPAA mean to you? How about ADPIE?...

Congrats on being near passing on your CPR; that's no small feat after your time away. Getting someone to hire you is going to be a whole different ballgame.

Statistically, those are pretty grim circumstances. So while I do wish you luck, my advice would be to have a "plan B" in case this revisited dream doesn't pan out.

I thought you can not take NCLEX if you don't pass the local registration exam.

It depends on the state, some do some don't want local exams

There are states that will let people take the NCLEX 19 years after finishing school, with no requirements for even a refresher course? Yikes!
