What's a good PDA for nursing students?

I originally posted this question in the "pre-nursing forum," figured I'd try my luck for an answer in this forum...

I was thinking about getting a PDA for when I'm in the nursing program. (I won't even get into that right now... )
Only problem is they're impossible to find in the stores nowadays so I can't just go down to Fry's or wherever and check 'em out so I'm forced to look online; However I'd rather not drop upwards of a few hundo for a model that I may like. Normally I would look to buy used so I'm out less $ but this increases the likelihood of having to replace the battery sooner rather than later, so I'd rather buy new.

Can anybody recommend models?

I am computer savvy but I've never actually used one of them as they nearly faded out of existence long before I had any use to own one. So as long as I'm able to view .PDFs, text and Word documents, and load drug guides and the like that'd be what I need, afaik.

Thx in advance!!

Moved to the Mobile computing forum.

There are a few threads here I love my TX but see a few go for either Iphone or smart phone. A lot will depend on what your school allows

I love my crackberry - er, blackberry for these purposes. My school allows it so that's what I'm using and so far so good. Very easy to use and I don't have to carry multiple electronics in my pocket. Good luck making a choice.

ugh I hated the TX. HATED. The HP is meh.

I didt get the choice, my class fee paid for a PDA and they issued us the TX and the HP for those who had vista on their computers. I no sooner relaized how sucky it was and really, its becoming obsolete (they havent updated it in what...like 5 or so years?) that I just got a BlackBerry Storm. I was due for a phone upgrade and instead of carrying around both a phone AND a PDA, I'd get one that was both. All my nursing programs (Skyscape) are compatible with it.

Most of my fellow students hate their PDAs as well and have stuck to their BlackBerrys and/or iTouch or iPhones.

I use a Dell Axim X51v. These were discontinued a couple of years ago so you can find them all over E-bay and Amazon for around $150. I like mine; it has a good battery life, wifi, and a large screen. You can go with smartphones that have a PDA built in, but you could run in to issues with keeping a cell phone on you during clinical.

Thx for the replies everyone...I've looked into it a little bit and I've decided on an iPod Touch.
Of course, I'll have to double check this with an admin in the nursing dept to ensure I'd be able to take it with me during clinicals...

But I do have a question so if there's any other geeks out there plz help!

Would there be an issue with a 2G iPod Touch with the "untethered jailbreaking" method applied installing programs from that I've acquired from iTunes' online store? This is assuming that Apple would be able to detect if a jailbroken iPod is attached to a computer that is logged into an iTunes account...but if Microsoft can do it with Xbox360s then it's possible. I'd hate to overlook something and get that thing bricked, ya know?

Also, is there a program that would allow me to load my own .PDFs/Word/.CHM documents, to my iPod and then view them?

Hi there,

I am having the exact same quandary. But have decided on the Itouch based on other reviews here, and affordability. Plus it is a cool device regardless, and if I am not mistaken can synch to both a PC or Mac. I have both.

Please keep us posted as to if you like it! Not sure about the jailbreaking, not even sure what that means!
