Using the iTouch as a PDA

I've been told that our school requires students to use PDAs, and I am considering purchasing the iTouch for that purpose. I was at Best Buy yesterday and noticed that there was a 16GB and also a 32GB, which was quite a bit more. Will the 16GB suffice for all the apps typically needed in a nursing program? I really can't see myself downloading more than 100 songs on it, mostly using it as a PDA.

Anyone here use the iTouch for their program and love it? Anyone hear buy it and wish they hadn't? Just trying to get a feel for how well it functions as a PDA and how many GB I will need. TIA!!!

Moved to the mobile computing forum, if you have a read there are a few threads discussing ITouch and what GB would be OK to use

If you can afford it, go for the 32g because you can't install expansion memory into the device.

You might be surprised once you get a Touch about the music you might want to download (and music videos, as well as pictures and audiobooks, etc). It comes in handy for stress relief. And there are some great free apps (games & such).

I don't use it for school (been out for 4yrs, but did use a palm), I do use it in practice. I have Skyscape apps. Love the Archimedes calculator. Having your resources handy in your purse is wonderful.

I want an Itouch..but for music only. I know this is random, but thats my opinion, maybe I'd add some applications to it, but I'd never just buy it for applications only, I think that's a waste of money. The OP said she couldn't imagine putting more thatn 100 songs on there and she's contimplating buying a 32G. That's insane. And those are very pricey, but as I don't know the price of PDAs, but I'd say she would be better off upgrading her cell phone to a smart phone, than to just be buying a 32G ipod for applications.

I have the 8GB iTouch second generation. The applications I've put on so far, like Epocrates, Archimedes, and many other free apps, are all VERY small. If you aren't planning on putting a LOT of songs and videos on there, then don't worry about the 32G. Perhaps someone with the full Skyscape or Unbound suites could let us know how much room they require?
Also, with the upgrading cell to smart phone vs iTouch PDA thing... Make sure your school and clinical sites will allow cell phones and or camera phones to be used before going that route. That's why I went with the iTouch, so I wouldn't have to worry about that possible problem.
Good luck!

I'm confused except for the spending money part. I think I will continue to read people's input before I decide.

I have iTouch 2nd gen. 32 gig and absolutely love it!
My advise: get the biggest size you can afford. My iTouch is 80% full... Agree about music - unless you have a huge library it won't take up much space. Applications are small too. But you might also want to upload ATI Cd's or other educational videos on your device and that's when the extra space will come handy

I hope this helps... I looked into PDA's other than Apple just to see prices. They were roughly the same as an iPod Touch and since I have an Apple computer, it just made more sense to go Apple. I would have liked to get the iPhone, but we are still in a contract with Verizon.

Anyhow, I asked the guy at Apple which size he recommended (I told him I'd be using it for music & medical apps). He recommended the 16gig as a minimum. I wanted to save as much $ as I could & didn't think I'd use that much memory.
So I got the 16gig & here's what I got going on... 603 songs, 0 songs, 41 photos, & 11 apps (the only ones medical are Epocrates, Perfect wheel, & MedCalc). My settings say that I have 11.6 gigs available. Once you start browsing the apps, it's hard not to get some of them

BTW, Apple stores give a 10% discount for military & I know they give a student discount on computers, might want to ask about the iPod Touch for PDA use.

Thanks! That helps a lot! I asked about a student discount for the iPod Touch and it doesn't apply. They did, however, have a discount for their laptops that included a free Touch, but I'm not in the market for a computer right now, lol!
