Tablet PC for Nursing Student?

I'm strongly tempted to buy a new tablet PC to use as I start as a new nursing student in August. I don't NEED a new laptop as I have an older one running Linux just fine but I'm thinking it would help with note taking during lectures, transcribing hand-written notes to files, and quick access to online reference materials. Would a tablet PC be of use to a nursing student? Or am I just trying to justify the cost of an expensive new toy?

I bought an HP TX2000z Tablet PC last May for nursing school. I thought using handwritten notes would help me retain more knowledge, but the novelty quickly wore off and I ended up using it like a regular laptop. The one thing I do recommend is using Microsoft's OneNote, especially if your lectures are in PowerPoint. I would convert PowerPoint into OneNote and type my notes besides the slides. If I was able to go back in time, I would've purchased a regular laptop. My tablet runs hot and the fan is on constantly plus a myriad of other issues. I would also check out this website before making any decisions www.tabletpcreview.com

I recently bought an HP Touchsmart tx2-1020us notebook PC and have been using it as a regular laptop. I haven't become used to the tablet features yet. I am debating whether I want to take it to school next term. I just envision it getting stolen or me dropping it and destroying it. The two or three people that I saw with PCs in school last term didn't seem to be doing much with them in class from what I could see. My PC was reasonable in price, I thought, so probably worth trying the tablet features.

I bought the same laptop right when I came out and paid an arm and a butt for it. I do not use the touch screen feature, however. If I do, it is rarely. I'll be sitting in class and touch the screen instead of using the mouse pad. If you use it often, it'd be a great investment. I do take my laptop to school and I leave it in the classroom hooked up. I am in an ADN program and there are not thiefs (that I know of) in my class. There are only 24 of us. Also, the majority of the class brings laptops as well. If a nursing student were to steal something from class, I hope they'd get kicked out PRONTO.

Thanks for the input. I am leaning towards the HP Touchsmart tx2z. I've been reading about them and have seen concerns about the heat they put out and the noise from the fan (as Starzburst also noted). Caliotter3 and Sarah Hay, do you have any thoughts on that? Would that make you NOT buy the laptop you bought?

I have also noticed the heat and the noise from the fan, but those things don't bother me. I am going to get one of those fans for mine the next time I'm in the store.

I am having that problem as well. When I first purchased it, it was okay. Now, the heat is unbearable and the noise! However, it isn't a problem in the classroom because I sit in the back where the electrical outlets are and the people who sit beside me are constantly chatting. I'm surprised our professor lets them ... even the one who talks the most recieved the award best nursing student of the year. [= Maybe our professor is a little on the deaf side ... haha!

Sarah, if the fan noise and heat have gotten worse since you first started using it, you may be having a cooling problem. I just had the same thing happen with a Toshiba. It turns out that one of the cooling fans bit the dust and a second fan was running full time to compensate. Any time it went into screensaver mode (which was pretty graphic intensive, with a bunch of life-like fish swimming around an aquarium) it would overheat and shut down. I finally figured out what was going on when I downloaded a free CPU temperature monitor and saw that it was hitting 100C, MUCH too high!

I underclock my tablet with Notebook Hardware Control (http://www.pbus-167.com/) and that helps with the heat and fan. If I don't use it, temp goes over 80C but with the program, it usually stays under 60C.

Thanks to all for their input. I bit the bullet and ordered an HP tx2z. I watched several YouTube videos about it and finally decided I can't be cheap & chicken forever! Then after I ordered it, I found a reference to LiveScribe pens! Oy! I'm glad I ordered the PC before I found it or I'd still be waffling. Those pens looked too good to be true!
